  1. Dude, you eat canned-Spam??!! ... or is it only for 'special' guests?
  2. From whats been written above, it seems the first rule of 'international' shouting is NOT to include Poms - they're always trying to pull a money-saving scam? I just take turns till I've had enough and politely exclude myself, or better till, change to non-alcoholic drinks - that way ya still got a glass in the mitt.

Funny how attitudes change when the object is given an extravagant title, eh? Women are like books: don't want one that's been ruffled by any old Dick.
  4. Le Spud: Thanks. I've never found it scary - just need to remember that every shadow can conceal a hole, and every hole is potentially many metres deep, so, don't go wandering blindly without being connected to an anchored rope. Breaching (back against one wall and feet against the other) a long slot unroped is always fun - particularly when the lower caverns are flooded and the flowing water echoes through the darkness - that's disconcerting! As for cave fauna, yes, there are some weird and wonderful sights - some amazing, like translucent spiders; or sitting in a tunnel w
  5. Two person roping: I haven't done any crack rescue , but done a fare bit of caving. The knotted-rope idea seems like a good way to arrest a fall in a crevasse, but obviously makes extraction hard. In caving we always carry a thinner (9mm) STATIC rope, in our packs which is light and necessarily NOT bulky (e.g. squeeze points, etc). If they're not used for pack hauling, etc, they can be used as an emergency extraction rope. Admittedly, 9mm is a bitch to prussick on, with or without mechanical ascenders. (ALWAYS use a STATIC rope, otherwise prussicking can be damn ti
  6. Two basic types: Short and long grain. Short is best used where stickiness is necessary e.g. most Oriental dishes. (Easier to pick up/shovel with chopsticks, use in rolls, etc.) Long is used predominantly on the Indian sub-continent because there is an understandable preference for fluffy non-sticky rice in their varied cuisine. Aromatic rices vary. Basmati is perhaps the highest quality long grained variety - and is an important substitute for those with diabetic problems. There is always an issue regarding which cooking method is best. Which one do yo'all use?

  8. So who is gonna police them?? The UN? Yeah right - the USA and the remainder of the so-called 'Security Council' run the UN. Anyway, ineffectual, jobs for the boy and US puppet Kofi baby couldn't lie straight in bed. DU is a silent long-term killer = genocide. Therefore, in a real sense, those using DU are contravening a UN resolution - go figure!

There's nothing to 'work around'. You may consider adopting the best bits of the NZ Building Code pertaining to earthquakes. According to a NZ mate (Ungineer), apparently they have a quite advanced set of recommendations, etc which may exceed those of J-Land.
  10. Family member worked on oil rigs out western Qld and NSW. Apparently there are huge reserves of oil/NG out there that are not 'released'. Similarly to the uranium debate, it all falls to politics, stock market listed companies, traders (futures) and shareholders ... all of which I seriously despise. Lets pollute the world for millenia because urbane prats wanna blow-dry their hair?!
  11. United = shite. Air Canada = marginal but sometimes acceptable. Air NZ = best. Qantas = very ordinary hospital food. Ansett (defunct) = best. JAL/All Nip = variable but generally okay. A group of mates & I were going to NZ from Sydney a few years ago. We flew on separate airlines because I wanted to accrue FF-points. They scoffed at the turbo prop Air NZ plane I caught from Christchurch to Queenstown - their Qantas plane being a jet. Anyway, we compared meals (lunch) on these flights. They got crumby sandwiches, etc. Air NZ gave us a large helping of smoked sa
  12. Didn't consider downloading stuff off The Net, generally will not. Will predominantly be loading sound and video files off 'devices' - camera's, camcords, digital audio, etc. Storage isn't a prob - External HDD's. The issue is, which FILE FORMATS are considered STANDARD in the industry. E.g. like GIF and JPG are in image files.
  13. It's all Clint Eastwood's fault! Knocking in all those pitons when making the Eiger Sanction! Dang Hollywood!!

Actually, it is across the boarder, 90 minutes away in Belgium. 694m. They built a 6m tower atop the hill so that visitors could reach 700m. It is depressing. Other than that, hills are hard to find without a similardrive. Besides what eveyone has advised (cycling, etc), put a weighted rucksack (weekend trip weight) on your back and walk the creeks and ridges that may surround that peak or elsewhere. The c
  15. I've purchased a Family-Tree program and wanna save both Audio and Video files in it. What are the most acceptable FORMATS (e.g. WAV, MP3, MPEG, etc) for storing these types of files so they're accessible into the future. That is - which file formats are considered main-stream/standard/generic? Thanks in advance for assistance.
  16. I've had them a couple of times just to give 'em the benefit of the doubt, but still find them bloody disgusting - somehow they're got a chemical flavour and are just overly sweet with no other taste. If I were to eat donuts, which is rare, I prefer the good old tried-n-tested ones like those from Donut King or Wendy's.

In an Outback pub, once saw a horse put its head through a window, one of the local patrons put a can of beer in its mouth - the horse tipped it up, drank the lot, crushed and dropped the can, then wandered off. I later heard the patron and the horse got into a fight because the horse didn't return the shout. Another time, saw the pub cat wander in, the publican tipped some beer into its saucer, the cat lapped it up then wandered off to lay beside

  20. Yes, when entering the Fish Markets main vehicle entry gates, try the shops located to the far left – there’s one over there that only specialises in oysters. It may not be open mid-week but give it a go, otherwise just shop around in the main market. Generally oysters are divided into which river system they originated – mostly northern NSW river systems. Others come from interstate. Personally, the best ones come from either the Karuah, Manning, Hastings, Nambucca or Clarence Rivers. If you like prawns, go for smaller ‘school’ prawns – they’re far tastier than the large king p
  21. Quote: Originally posted by Goemon: Anyone have recommendations for good places to eat in Sydney? Recommendations: 1. Catch a bus to one of the northern beaches, grab some fish & chips from the local shop and sit on the beach watching the waves roll in. 2. Pack a lunch, walk along one of the many tracks situated along the harbour and snack at leisure. 3. Alternatively, the Sydney Fish Markets have good places to get a nice lunch and sit in the sun watching the fishing fleet/seagulls. Most of the restaurants in the Sydney CBD are pretentious - all the good eateries are in the

  23. Dudes, malaria isn’t like the flu, you can’t just shrug it off. My Uncle caught it when fighting in PNG during WW2 and eventually succumbed to its effects not-that-much-later in life. Okay, extreme case, but it is ranked #5 killer in the world, so thinking that the simple use of DEET products and wearing long clothes will stop it is not realistic. All it takes is one bit of a particular mozzie and you’re tagged. Short term use of a medication is the sensible alternative … I believe from discussions here that some of the people on this forum have used vastly more dangerous substances, much
  24. Drink a few beers, interspersed with swigs of water, then switch to vodka for the remainder of the binge - no hang-over in the morning, and still able to down (and keep down) a kebab with chilli sauce! (Tried and tested method to drink your mates under the table and make 'em pay the next morning. )
  25. Besides immunisation for Hep A & B, Typhoid, etc, we used DOXYCYCLINE for Malaria during a three week trip to PNG - I'd definitely use it again. Although side effects are dependent upon many things, it made me feel like superman - nuttin' could hurt me. (Nice buzz to maintain 24/7 during a long, rough trip!) Do a Wikipedia search on it - also treats many other nasties that you wouldn't wanna get, and helps heal scratches, etc so they don't become ulcerated in the tropical conditions.
