  2. If you want rocking mountains with good snow awesome jaw droping steeps head to the interior of Canada. Red Mountain is a small version of Jackson hole that doesnt get skied out as fast plus the Back Counrty kicks ass. PS when they tell you its hard it is sometimes you have to drop off something before you can ski. Fernie 4 massive bowls that link into massive bowls. Do the line in fish bowl named 10000 turns off to the skiers left side of the peak its 3000 to 4000 vert to the cat track starts with a steep chute and funnels into a steep bowl. epic. Whitewater hike skiers left of the lift hkie

  4. From Gifu city about 1 hour or 2 depending on traffic and that can get bad. weekday no probs you can fly up there by car. Bus is better than the local train go to the ski shops and ask. if you cant speak jap bring a friend the first time to work it out for you.
  5. I think that Arai could have positioned they main lifts better indeed. Put it up on skiers left and you get a whole lot more. Your right about patrol lots dont have a clue but the guys at Arai can out ski a lot of people, same with Cortina. I know that most of those guys would rather ski it than close it. I think that they are just doing there job. That said.... At North American resorts we blast here they dont. I think it makes a big difference if you cant blast. (does anyone know why i was told that it was illegal somethingto do with laws after the war) Most of the places that hav
  6. Your right about that day it was safe Ocean the top parts of the runs through the trees were nice but the bottoms were heavy at least for the 1080s I was using. My point being is that it is more complex then we think. Back home we sometimes have to wait for hours and or a day or 2 for things to open up. The patrol sometimes want time to blast or let the snow pack sit for a day, or if its still snowing they mught just close it down completly. At places like Fernie and whitewater if you duck a closed rope when they have it closed for what ever reason you will loose sking priviliges for a year.
  7. Yes Ocean you are right about that but 2 years ago in simalr conditions I set off a few small slides. The slides slowed and became self building snowballs one went onto the main course and was a good 25 kilos. Iwas lucky enough to get it stopped by bodychecking no more than 5 times. At Cortina when I want to ski the trees I bring my beacon and ski with my gear. As for the patrol the previous year they allowed tree sking but for some reason they killed it. They are tring to market themselves as a family resort. Last year I sae the after effects of a huge avalanche in the trees

  9. Ok I agree about some resorts being bckwards about somethings, but as for Arai and some other places you have to take some things into account. Number one amount of snowfall and different temps make the area a little dangerous at times. I think they do a good job opening up what they have. If you look at Arai in an objective way you will see a lot of terrain traps where if it does go your fu...ked. Plus under the gondola ther is one mother of a cliff where people have died. Also the park departments here dictate some what how much terrain you can use. When I worked at Kawaba in Gumma 8 yea
  10. This debate has raged for years.Unless your a place with one hell of a market niche, You should never segregate half the paying customers. There is only one resort that seems to make it work and thats Alta in America. But now that they have a shared ticket and lift with snowbird..... how long will the segergation last. We all do the same thing slide jump drink eat etc.
  11. Most groomers i new new the mountain front to back. anways the dam things have enough lights on them not to be a problem. white outs included
  12. If your do it just before the resodt opens its too soft and gets pushed into moguls. Resorts in general have more Groomers on the Mountain at around 12 midnight. Safety factors and all. Inthe early season groomers want to give the snowmakers some time to make snome some to push around. Plus depending on the size of the mountain it can take a while.
  13. Hey where are you going to buy passes this year and what is the price. I was think Norikura cause last season it only cost 20000 man and the hiking is great. What do you guys have I mind this year.
  14. I twisted me knee once of a Jump In Sutton Quebec but I have 2 friends that injuried themselves horriblily. First one Friend Darby was riding with us at Sun peaks. _Guy was having a bad day first off his new binding is missing a bolt before the first run goes and fixes it. Then he was riding down a small noll into a small valley on the other side is a bigger noll both Dary and and another boarder friend of mine wanted to do oppisite things darby wanted to go up one side and the other guy up the other. when they saw each other they both zigged and the nose of their boards caught their shi

  18. I dont know of an indoor place in kyoto is there. If so enlighten me. I no of one in Hyogo its so so If you want to jump so so. You can catch a day trip bus from Kyoto station to any resort in Gifu Wings, Dynaland, Takasu and so on. You can book it through Alpen its a chain sports store they are everywhere. Look in the Japanese papers and soon they will have pull out ads. That should tell you the location nearest to you. There is a big store called Mitsuhashi Sports on Oike dori - Karasuma Oike station. But I find them to be expensive but they have the biggest selection in Kyoto. Also if y
  19. I dont want to let the secret out but When the conditions are prefect nothing beats the little reasort in the conner cortina. 2 years ago they had rocking jumps but they went family lst year and killed them. For a little extra you can get a pass to Norikura too and they have 2 pipes and some good jumps. Norikuras front side would be a dream to ski but youll get caught if you do. Also you can find a 20 foot cliff there if you look for it.
