Cheap place to stay in Habuka?
Fattwins replied to Tachyon's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Snowbeds is good but there are cheaper places. Unless they changed the prices the cheapest is 3000 to 4000 on holidays. A place called More resort will give you a bunk and shower for around 2000 yen. If you want to go new years time then beg cause it is most likly already full. -
advice on fat skis
Fattwins replied to zwelgen's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
If you like ski Volkl are stiff a little difficult when not sking hard stuff. Salomon pocket rockets soft light and allow for versitlity out of the soft stuff. Line about the same. Rossi skis are desent soft durible but the scratch BC are mounted center for more jib still but Im sure they ride well Atomic there are too many choices but they make bomber skis. Ficher big sticks stay away from the biggest one its made with Alaska and Europe in mind and we are not there. Same with the new Volants Youll be down the mountain in 4 turns no fun here. K2 good skis new fattwin -
Hakuba resorts: which is best?
Fattwins replied to telf's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Im going to be grandpa and say watch out under the goryu gondola. That area is not controled. If you want to do it I suggest the ridges to give you and Idea of the snow settlement. I have heard a lot of talk this year. With this site taking off like crazy this year, a lot of people will be tring things that look great and 90% of the time they are, but be careful. Slides can happen in the trees too I have seen it. Be aware if you see signs of avlanches take heed and care not to go there. Dont be afraid to look for the signs read a book take a course. Watch for terrain traps pla -

Yeah its cold but here is some transceiver info. I have 2 one is survival on Snow good range one of the bestfor that, but analog meaning sound only. Older versions had possible problems in multiple searches but the new version is fixed. That said it does the job at a great price. I also bought a Mammut Barryvox digital and analog I got a great price so I bought it for the wife. She likes to follow and is good enough now. Havent used it yet but in tests its so easy it does half the work for you. Good for rookies. uses sound until you get close then switches to digital to pin point. -

Oufreeski2 when I went they rented twins. unless your super keen on backwards jumping that day dont bother with twins. That said falling on the ramp looks painful and although easy its not exactly like snow. It hurts cause u land flat and although the water gives you have 170cms more or less that stops you from going in smooth. also think about landing on your back or doing a belly flop from 3 to 5 meters. Ouch. 4 hours a day is enough for this guy -

Fattwins replied to Matt's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
47 is good but there is more to the hakuba valley give some of the other places a go. Happos skiable vert cant be beat. Cortina is a hidden gem. watch the trees at 47 the patrol can get pass pullie. There are a lot of places to ride at 47 other than the quad. -

Same dyna or takasu will buy a pass lets go early and meet at circle K. My rating is taking a dive and I give people the goods. Water jump Nagano Kobe and now mie. If you use your own skis have a wet suit (in mid summer you dont need one). cost is around 3 to 4000 yen depending on location. But dont think it doesnt hurt if you f up it does. Watch your kidneys on missed back flips. also you will need a life jacket or rent one. Last watch your skis if you use your own they can break. I broke my pair but they were old ones . -

Happos usagi rabbit is the most famous in japan by far. not the hardest but its in the top ten. the field 50 meters wide and drops about 400 meters down in length. If you can do it without stopping and falling your a hero. huge 1 meter drops in some places though. -

Do you stick to the same places?
Fattwins replied to HoTRoD's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Yeah there are a couple good places I know but I try to keep things quiet. They get lots of people but nobody rides in the good spots and the backcountry is great.
