this is my first season to drive up to the mountains ( used to go by train ) and just bought a 4wd isuzu. Should i go for snow tires or just pull over and put on chains? which give better grip on icy roads?? chains will cost 20,000 for a set whereas tires will cost 80, 000. do they merit the cost??what do you use?? which are better??

klubhead replied to amandanism's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
bought a quicksilver pants jacket set 2 years ago. awesome!! warm. baggy enough not to look like a skiier and lots of pockets!! also like to wear jack wolfskin, colunbia and patagonia, their stuff is built to last. -
Q to snowboarders...
klubhead replied to lin's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
always make it a point to point it straight and go!! technically, going straight on a board is really going down the slope in a very wide radius curve but does the trick. never have problems with backside turns, skiers probably have a similar problem with ' tunnel vision '? -
no more niseko for me! after 5 years boarding there, the place is getting too crowded, especially with tourists from abroad. The magic has gone, just another resort now!

Pass pulling and just saying no
klubhead replied to Ocean11's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
no, not at all peaker. I board with friends and we carry beacons, shovels and probes. AND we could rescue someone better than 99% of ski patrols can. The point is just because someone says ' you can't do that' doesn't make it legally binding, plain and simple!! there is unfortunately a tendency for people to accept what people in positions of authority say. 2 years ago an aussie boarder was detained in the ski patrol office in hakuba for 45 minutes against his wil. have you ever heard of unlawful imprisonment? My point is don't follow rules JUST BECAUSE they are written on some quasi- officia -

a lot of ski resort area land lies on national park territory so technically you can' t tresspass ( if the resort does lie on national park territory they cannot stop you from going out of bounds). they can stop you from riding the lift but they cannot physically restrain you or try to take away your lift pass. such action can be interpreted as assault. So if they do try to pull such a stunt, tell them YOU will call the police if they touch you!! -
Happo - a skiers mtn?
klubhead replied to klingon's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
what makes it a ski hill?? well, when you see millions of moguls all over the place combined with big sections often closed off for some ski teams to practise on, you can understand why i call it a ski hill -

went to charmonix last year, boarded at les grand montes, les houches, le brevent, le tour, etc...... BUT easily prefer boarding in japan, infrastructure is light years ahead here ( and we get more consistent snow ). However, charmonix night life kicks ass!!! drum'n' bass, deep house, breaks, all there!!! -

went there last wednesday. snow condition was good BUT it was crowded so i wouldn't dream of going there on a weekend. It isn't big enough for the large number of people who would go there on a holiday. i sent some photos to this site but they haven't been put on the site. didn't see any kickers on wednesday. klubhead -

hey oceans!! you calling me a nerd??? the guitar is THE most overused instrument, especially in japan. you don't have to be a nerd to realise this. With macs, samplers, etc we are making music free from that formulaic rubbish, every roxy music, dire straits etc.. song sounds the same. klubhead ( the nerd with the sweetest tw200 custom and who goes heliboarding all over the world )
