  • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 11th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this seas 482cm Posted on Saturday 11th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 10:15am update: Increasing blue skies and sunshine over Yuzawa now. All data on this report remains as per original report. Original early morning report: Good morning from Yuzawa. We had a short spell of blue sky and sun yesterday morning, but for the most part it was cloudy with snow falling yesterday. Last night at 7pm there was 25cm of fresh snow piled up at our Yuzawa measuring point. After clearing that snow off, this morning there is another 25cm. So that makes a nice round total of 50cm since the report yesterday. Excellent! Such a large amount feels like something of a surprise... or perhaps I just wasn't paying enough attention! It looks like our region, along the neighbouring mountains in northern Gunma Prefecture, received the most snowfall in Japan over the last 24 hours. As it should be, of course. ;) Kagura is reporting 30-40cm 'since yesterday' and Maiko Snow Resort is also reporting 30-40cm of fresh snowfall this morning. It is still snowing (on and off) early this morning and we are expecting light or maybe moderate snow to continue a little longer. Depending on which forecast you look at, we can expect the snow to ease off sometime by afternoon or this evening. (Might be just a temporary glimpse, but I can spot a bit of blue sky on the Yuzawa Kogen webcam image below. It somehow feels like one of those days when it might clear up quicker than expected.) Clearer skies and sun are generally forecast from early morning tomorrow. With all the lovely fresh snow around, weekend visitors should be extremely pleased with the conditions they can get to enjoy. Today is the first day of the long weekend. (Monday is 'Coming of Age Day' and a national holiday). There will be some fireworks at Yuzawa Park ski area tonight and Kandatsu Snow Resort tomorrow night. No word yet on when the Landau Ropeway (connecting GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen) might open. ----------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 11th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 484cm Posted on Sunday 12th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The early morning snowfall yesterday eased up fairly soon after the report, with about 2cm to add to this report from that. During the day we got some blue sky and sun, particularly mid- to late morning. The afternoon remained bright and sunny at times, and before evening arrived it was largely cloudy once again. It was a relatively mild day with temperatures rising a few above zero in town. We were told to expect some sunny skies today but forecasts seem to have adjusted and we have cloud cover early on. Weather conditions have been quite changeable in recent days, so who knows what we will end up during the day. ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 12th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 14th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this seas 489cm Posted on Tuesday 14th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We has another mixed bunch of weather conditions going on yesterday, depending on where you were. It ranged from light snow, moderate snow, and some clearings in the clouds with a bit of sun too. Temps on the mild side of things again, getting up to around +3C in town early afternoon. 5cm of snowfall has been recorded at our measuring point since the report yesterday morning. And it looks like we might have another day of mild but varied weather conditions, though it should be mostly either cloudy or fine. Forecasts disagree on how much sun to expect. As of 7:15am, there's less cloud and more blue sky on view than there was just 30 minutes ago. It feels like we might get another beautiful morning. Colder conditions and good snowfall is still lined up on forecasts for tomorrow, particularly later in the day. ----------------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 14th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 15th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 490cm Posted on Wednesday 15th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We got some lovely blue skies and sunshine again yesterday morning, with cloud starting to take over the skies in the afternoon and then some snow falling at higher elevations. It was another day of mild daytime temperatures, up to around +5C in town at lunchtime. A few comments on the snowfall/mild/weather conditions in an upcoming report. We got a bit wetter down in town late night but this morning it is snowing. Not much more than a dusting really up until now but hopefully we will be getting snowed on throughout the day. This morning both Maiko Snow Resort and Kagura report 10cm of snowfall on their upper slopes. Head high for the fresh! Looks like there might be a chance of some more sun tomorrow, but back to snow tomorrow night and into Friday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 15th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 16th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 41cm Snowfall at base this seas 531cm Posted on Thursday 16th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A very pleasing amount of fresh snow has arrived since the report yesterday morning. The snow was coming down heavy at times from mid-afternoon and as a result this morning there was 41cm piled up at our Yuzawa measuring point. The first (small) icicles of the season have been spotted on our roof this morning, too. (Winter feels more complete when we get our icicles). Kagura Ski Area is reporting about 30cm fresh snowfall in the Kagura Area and 50cm in the Mitsumata Area. Interesting. Yuzawa Kogen is reporting about 40cm. Maiko Snow Resort has not said anything in time for this report, but I would expect about the same amount. I think we can expect a good layer of fresh pretty much everywhere this morning. It is still snowing lightly at 8am, but expected to gradually ease off and clear up during the day today. We may even get some sunshine later in the day, possibly even before noon, according to some forecasts. Some snow is forecast again for tomorrow and then we should be back to clearer skies by Saturday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 16th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 17th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 33cm Snowfall at base this seas 564cm Posted on Friday 17th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Some very interesting weather going on at the moment for sure. Yesterday started off with that very nice thick layer of fresh snow, snow still falling and icicles, but in the afternoon we had clear blue skies and sunshine. Everywhere was looking stunning. Temps hovered around zero, but it probably felt a bit warmer than that. By evening, you wouldn't have thought that we had recorded 40cm of fresh snowfall nine hours hours later. And now this morning we have a lot more snow. Another 31cm of it, in fact! With 2cm from yesterday morning (post-report), that's another 33cm to add to this report. Maiko Snow Resort is this morning reporting 40cm of snowfall. Over at Kagura, the Tashiro Area is closed for the day (and so too Dragondola), and the Kagura Area is 'on hold'. At the start of the day, only the Mitsumata Area is open. The Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway might also be delayed (or not open)... they are currently checking. Other ski areas appear to be opening, though some lifts may be delayed as they deal with the snow. After today there isn't much snowfall on the forecast for the week ahead and we may get a fair amount of clearer weather. Let's just hope temperatures don't rise too much. Have fun. Take care. ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 17th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 18th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this seas 574cm Posted on Saturday 18th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 9:30am update: The sun is out with increasingly blue skies! It is quickly turning into a beautiful morning. Original report: There has been another 10cm of snowfall since the report yesterday morning and we can probably expect more than that at higher elevations. Light snow is still falling in places, especially north of Yuzawa. That is expected to ease off, leaving us with a cloudy morning and sun later on in the afternoon. Sometimes on days like this the sun appears sooner than forecasts would have us believe, and that might be the case today too. Today should keep quite cold, even if the sun comes out. Tomorrow looks more likely to be clear and sunny from early on in the day... but mild too (up to +5C and perhaps higher in town). Good news for the 'Yuzawa Snow Link' connections this morning. The Landau Ropeway connecting the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen will be open from this morning. The other ski area in the Yuzawa Snow Link arrangement is Ishiuchi Maruyama, which is connected to at the top with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa. A special ticket is required to freely ski between those 3 ski areas. Kagura is saying that some lifts might be delayed opening this morning (dealing with snow). Other than that, other ski areas should be opening as planned this morning. It's peak season period now. It will probably be a busy weekend. Have fun and take care out there. ----------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 18th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 24th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 574cm Posted on Friday 24th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. No fresh snow for a while now... Whisper voice: Heard some rain falling late last night and early morning. Normal voice: Right now, it's a largely cloudy morning, but the sun is breaking through in places. I can't find any news of snowfall at higher elevations from any official sources, though the GALA webcam shows what looks like a dusting on the roof of the main quad. Maybe a cm or two? Today we might get to see some snow on the mountains (don't expect much) with the chance of sleet/rain in town later. So that sun breaking through might not last long. Tomorrow seems like the better chance for some 'proper' snow. Let's have it! Always find it amusing (or some other words) how some ski areas describe the snow conditions on their slopes using exactly the same descriptive wording today as they did on days when we got 40+cm of fresh snow. Hmmm... no. ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 24th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 26th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this seas 577cm Posted on Sunday 26th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Changeable weather yesterday and overnight we have some snow. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5cm up top. Around 2-3cm of snow in places around town. All fresh snow is always very welcome, but several cm is not enough for a proper reset, of course. It is a cloudy morning with a chance of more light snow at times during the day today. Variable visibility around town and the mountains this morning and there is a bit of a north-westerly wind. There seems to be a problem with Mitsumata Ropeway this morning... and as of 8:30am they are not able to predict when it might be fixed and advising people to head over to Tashiro. Oh dear. Someone asked about other planned Yuzawa Town firework displays planned for this season. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 30th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this seas 590cm Posted on Thursday 30th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Fresh snow to report! Here is what ski areas are reporting: Yuzawa Kogen: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10-20cm Kagura: 15cm Our own measurement is 13cm. Maybe not as 'full on' and as much as we were expecting and hoping for, but this fresh layer is most welcome. It should have refreshed runs out there. Further snow is forecast into tomorrow, so let's hope it continues to build up. At time of report, there is some sun peeking through clouds in places. Kagura is not opening the top Number 5 pair lift due to windy conditions up there. In other news, it looks like Naeba has re-opened that top Takenokoyama lift. ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 30th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 31st January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 48cm Snowfall at base this seas 638cm Posted on Friday 31st January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. An excellent end to the month! Yesterday there might not have been as much snow as we expected, even some sun at times, but Nature has delivered overnight. First of all, this is how much fresh snow ski areas are reporting: Kagura (Mitsumata): 50cm Yuzawa Kogen: 50cm Maiko Snow Resort: 40-50cm 48cm has just been cleared from our measuring point (since the report yesterday). This is the full reset we were hoping for. Ski areas are coping with all the snow early on and so some lifts might be delayed. The main and Tashiro Areas of Kagura are not going to be open today due to wind/weather, so only the Mitsumata Area will be open. Otherwise, all ski areas appear to be opening. Update: The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa (and Landau Ropeway) is also closed today. Limited visibility and some deep snow out there, so special care should be taken in these conditions. The snow should ease off by tomorrow, leaving us with what is forecast to be a generally calmer weekend. (Mainly just cloudy or maybe a bit of sun at times). ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 31st January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Another 17cm of snow to report this morning from our measuring point, with Kagura, Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort ski areas all reporting 20cm. It's more like 10cm just to the north of Yuzawa in Minamiuonuma. It is still snowing early morning, though expected to stop sometime soon leaving us with a generally cloudy day. And that is what is forecast for tomorrow too. (Perhaps the chance of some sun?)
