Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 33cm
Snowfall at base this seas 564cm

Posted on Friday 17th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

Some very interesting weather going on at the moment for sure.

Yesterday started off with that very nice thick layer of fresh snow, snow still falling and icicles, but in the afternoon we had clear blue skies and sunshine. Everywhere was looking stunning.

Temps hovered around zero, but it probably felt a bit warmer than that. By evening, you wouldn't have thought that we had recorded 40cm of fresh snowfall nine hours hours later.

And now this morning we have a lot more snow. Another 31cm of it, in fact! With 2cm from yesterday morning (post-report), that's another 33cm to add to this report. Maiko Snow Resort is this morning reporting 40cm of snowfall.

Over at Kagura, the Tashiro Area is closed for the day (and so too Dragondola), and the Kagura Area is 'on hold'. At the start of the day, only the Mitsumata Area is open. The Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway might also be delayed (or not open)... they are currently checking.

Other ski areas appear to be opening, though some lifts may be delayed as they deal with the snow.

After today there isn't much snowfall on the forecast for the week ahead and we may get a fair amount of clearer weather. Let's just hope temperatures don't rise too much.

Have fun. Take care.
