Only a centimeter or two of the light stuff has fallen so far, but hopefully a bit more will accumulate before the sun and warmer weather that looks likely over the next two days. Cross your fingers for later in the week, when some heavy snow looks likely. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A pretty good snowfall overnight - not as great as a lot of us would have liked, but maybe 30-40cm in places, though resorts posting smaller updates. The snow keeps on falling this morning, and it was pretty cold for the daily ritual of using heavy machinery to clear frozen water; about -5 at 6 am. Light winds from the north, some fog higher. No heavy snow on the forecast until later in the week, but some sun around Tuesday for those who like that shiny stuff. Your writer awaits zero visibility due to snow and the need for snorkels. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After a beautiful sunny day yesterday, the snow is back today. Not a huge accumulation so far, but the wind has shifted at the base of Akakan to the north—always a good sign—with the fog that often accompanies new snowfall. No dramas today; just time to get out, ski, and hopefully see a good build-up of the snowpack (i.e. skiing on the soft stuff again). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some great snow to get the new year really going; Akakan says 55cm and I'm not disagreeing. Puts things back into the holiday mood. The courses were a bit bumpy, though, because the snow is still pretty young—it has a lot of moisture in it. Typical Myoko powder, full-bodied and rich. I have to apologize for writing late, but it was for a very good reason. A snowboarder going sidecountry decided to keep on going and keep on going until he ended at the bottom of a massive valley, down a slope so steep it could almost be called a cliff. A few members from the local search and rescue (including your writer) went out last night to try and find his location; then we went up early in the morning to try again, and were there the whole day. It doesn't look good. So a big request, reminder, educational tidbit: if think you're a hot powder rider and you head off without knowing where you are going (ski area maps are not acceptable), with clothes for the piste (like cotton) and not something that could keep you alive overnight, and without telling anyone, you are not smart and you could kill yourself. There's a lot of stuff that you should also carry if you're going to sidecountry - an avalanche set of transceiver, shovel and probe would be a good place to start - but we'll leave that to you, as I am getting long-winded. We do care about you, people, and when a search and rescue for someone who made a huge mistake doing the same fun we like, and doesn't end well, it makes you feel terrible. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow and some pretty strong winds overnight. Officially another 40cm, and that sounds about right, looking at the fall around the house (at the base of lovely Akakura Kanko resort). I haven't got the town report yet today, but I think it's time to get out and burn off the results of the last end-of-the-year party. With the wind up, though, there's always the chance that the gondola will slow/stop, although the sind seems to have come down a lot in the last hour. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . OK, here we go on the first day of lift operations in Myoko for the 2013-14 season! Akakura Kanko and Akakura Onsen will both be open (limited) today; Ikenotaira, Suginohara and Seki will hold off until the 21st. Not much fresh snow overnight; it was sunny and cold at dawn today, but it's looking more promising higher up the hill. The forecasts are all pointing to precipitation, possibly heavy, over the next few days. Whatever does happen, we're pretty much normal this year, and the snow always does come. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. The ski and snowboard season is now over with the lift at Shibutoge finishing up yesterday afternoon. It has been a long season and one where we enjoyed large amounts of snow in Shiga Kogen. It was a very nice contrast with the season before and it has us excited for next season. Well, maybe after a bit of a rest and a recharge...! Luckily, Shiga Kogen is a great place to be during the summer months as well as in winter. I highly recommend you take a look back over the season along with the Snowfall Analysis page (blue tab at the top) to re-live the season and compare it with previous seasons. That's it from me. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . 1st May 2016... Today is the last day of the 2015-2016 season (with just one short run remaining open at Kumanoyu today). Looking back over my archived Shiga Kogen Now reports here on SnowJapan, let's take a look at the closing dates for all resorts in Shiga Kogen over recent years: 14/15 season: 17th May 13/14 season: 25th May 12/13 season: 26th May 11/12 season: 27th May 10/11 season: 29th May 09/10 season: 30th May So as you can see, this season has ended considerably earlier than usual. And it's actually interesting - and slightly worrying - to see that the last day of the season has also been getting progressively 'earlier' each season in recent years. The timing of the days+dates may well have something to do with that, but still... For the season that has just finished, it's no real surprise with the weather and snowfall that we experienced this time round. Resorts themselves are using phrases such as 例年に無い積雪不足 (snow shortages not experienced in previous seasons). I was reading through the season end reports on Nozawa Now and Madarao Now, and it's a fairly similar story here. This season the consistency that we are used to just wasn't there for the most part and there were more than a few times when we had to go back to discussing the 'odd weather' in these reports. Please be sure to look back over the season reports to get a clear picture of how it all happened. And as the other reports have mentioned, make sure to read the reports from previous seasons as well. Still, it may not have been anything like a classic season but I enjoyed some very fine days out there on the snow, as did many people who I met visiting from overseas. But here's to a return to more consistency and huge amounts of regular snowfall in 16/17! Shiga Kogen is of course a fine place to visit throughout the year - especially the ability to escape the heat and humidity of the valleys and cities - and now that the snow is not blocking the roads you can approach the region from Gunma as well as from the Nagano side. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . I haven't been up there today - I'm actually in Nagano at the moment - but the Shibutoge lift still plans to be open through until Sunday... which will most definitely see the end of the 2013/2014 season. Generally fine conditions are forecast for the weekend if you so inclined! This is my last Shiga Kogen Now report for the season. The season started on Saturday 16th November 2013 with just the one lift moving at the Kumanoyu area. I make that 191 days of lift movement... over 6 months! That's some going. Of course it was a while before things got going and lots of the lifts in Shiga Kogen have long since stopped moving, but still - that's one long season. I have been reading the other Now report wrap ups for 13/14 and a fair few of them - at least the ones in this region of Honshu - ring a bell. It has been up and down and not much of the full on long-lasting blizzard conditions. Still, get the timing right and there were some excellent conditions to enjoy (or, get timing wrong and be disappointed!) Please do take a look through the archives of the reports... not only for 13/14 but for other seasons too. We already have a tentative opening date for 2014/2015 ----> Saturday 15th November. We need the snow to co-operate of course. Here's hoping for a classic kind of season next time round. Shiga Kogen is of course relatively cool during the hot summer months and a fine place to visit. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . The 2012/2013 season at Shiga Kogen is now finished, with the last lifts at Yokoteyama being the last yesterday afternoon. The long season is now over and it's a bit of downtime for many people here now as they properly switch into 'green season'. Which, for Shiga Kogen, mostly means hiking, trekking, leisurely walks taking in the scenery and relaxing in onsen. Anyway, that's it for the Shiga Kogen Now reports for this season. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Shiga Kogen on this last day of the season. The Shiga Kogen ski season started (on 9th November 2022) and ended with that Number 4 lift and run at the Yokoteyama ski area. Considering the much-talked-about lower-than-average snowfall season, that's pretty impressive. It has been a curious season, and in many ways, it has been a return to something like normality after the bleaker backdrop of the covid years. Of course, there are still lots of masks around in Japan, but there are also more people everywhere (that's my guess rather than confirmed stats). And there were definitely more friendly visitors from overseas. It wasn't a bumper season in terms of snowfall, but that doesn't mean there wasn't good/great snow – I certainly got to enjoy a fair amount of that, and I hope you did too if you visited. Shiga Kogen benefits from being high up, so it is colder and less susceptible to rain when it is doing that lower down in the valleys. Still, let's hope that we get more snow next year. We always want more, don't we?! This is the last Shiga Kogen report of the season. There’s lots to do and see in Shiga Kogen when there is no snow, even if it is just escaping the unbearable summer heat of the cities! I'll be back with you in November with any pre-season news.
