Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 3cm
Snowfall at base this season 447cm

Posted on Wednesday 15th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

I'll bet the other Now! reports are saying the same thing, but it's cold out there!

The car tells me it's -11 (and he's highly reliable). It's made for a very pretty morning, too, with frost on the surface of the snow sparkling in the sun.

There are some clouds building up to the east and south (unusually; more often clouds move in from the west and north), and unkai - a sea of clouds - flowing along the valleys from Nagano City.

One big development in Myoko this year is the huge growth of international travelers. Which also means the powder is getting tracked out way fast. This has not been a super-heavy snow year, so I wonder if the crowds will continue to be satisfied (it's the first time I've felt like this is a small place, which of course it's not).

Great for the hotels and restaurants, of course; almost like going back to the boom years (well, better than that; no one-hour lift waits these days!).
