Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 20cm
Snowfall at base this season 576cm

Posted on Friday 24th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

A perfectly sunny day today, and a chance for visitors to finally see the mountain. Of course, snow doesn't magically appear on the hills (in other words, give me socked-in, full-blown snowfall anytime), but I'll agree it does look absolutely beautiful out there.

The temperatures are still in the minus range, but the word from national TV this morning is for highs in the end-March range. It could be pretty warm out there later in the day.

For the backcountry, that does set off some alarms. First as the snow melts and softens, and then again when the temperatures get cold and fresh snow falls on that melt layer. Keep an eye out and check out the snowpack carefully in the coming week, as things change.

I am at home and late today, so all the snow reports are officially in today.
