Music - buy CDs, download, copy??

Recommended Posts

What do you do?

I still buy CDs and have not got into downloading music, etc - don't know much about it to be honest.

But I'm interested to know - do you download music? Do you pay for it? Do you still buy CDs?

Your thoughts on the whole issue....

I've hardly ever bought CDs so nearly all I have is tapes from the 80s. I got bored of those, and so when I got ADSL and a fast computer, I started downloading stuff. First from WinMX which I didn't like, then from Audio Galaxy which was ace, and when the lawyers killed that, Kazaa which is so-so.

A lot of the music files end suddenly, say 'wwlooppp-lluppp' in the middle, and are misnamed. But some of them aren't, and you can get some great songs.

So when the music industry is saying P2P is killing them, at least where I'm concerned it's not true - I was never buying music anyway.

Oh, and if there was a system where you could download any song, with good quality, for a small fee, I'd be happy to pay. But as there isn't at the moment, I don't. It's no skin off my nose...

first i got kazaa, then i had to rid myself of the spyware, then i found kazaa lite, then it all seemed to be taking too much time so i started listening to internet radio, and there r some wicked stations that keep me entertained in a variety of moods. dont feel the need to use P2P. copying from friends though is still worth the effort.

only 2 years ago i was stunned to find not everyone owned boxes of cd's (but how do they live? i pondered), but now i havent bought one for nearly 8months.

I am using iSwipe which is a kind'a peeping tom P2P program for Mac's that uses Gnutella, Hotline, Open Napster, Carrcho(?) as it's main search parameters. Hellishly unstable and a not too goo strike rate, but not too different from any other PC P2P I understand. No advertising and really simple interface (a little too simple.) I am however in the market for something with a broader range of music.

Anyone else with sugestions for Macs?

I am using Limewire and it wasn't doing that much for me until i scored a crack for the PRO edition. Now I am getting heaps again, just like the old days with Napster, Audiogalaxy etc.

I haven't tried ISWIPE yet though.

I've been using LimeWire for a bit now. It is good with the well known bands, very good. But as db mentioned when it comes to the lesser known bands it is pretty poor. I have been looking for one song in particular for a couple of month's know and can't find it anywhere! Rather annoying.

As for any other suggestions - sorry Mogs don't have any!

At home I buy a lot of cds. I am a bit of a collector, but mainly I just don't really like the idea of a CDR collection. I download a lot of music but if it worth buying I will.

That being said I don't think I am going to be doing too much cd shopping in Japan. The prices are a little outrageous compared to the $10US or so I am used to paying (but not as bad as England - geeze!). I ripped most of my CDs before I came and my digital collection is up around 30GBs. But I have been into mp3 compression since 95.

Http was awesome when it was possible. Napster was dope but it's gone too. I use WinMX for P2P now but it's too hard to get a consistent rip if you want a whole cd. Best out there now is nntp but you just gotta take what you can get there, plus some people seem to think it is necessary to encode at 320kbps (baka!).
