scoobydoo 0
OK here we go. As part of my job I had to visit about 6 different places today - all offering my endless coffee, tea and snacks. I wasn't prepared for this and I'd already had a few cups before I set out. I found it very difficult to refuse without sounding impolite. My Japanese isn't good enough to be able to do that well. One thing I really hate is being almost forced to eat or drink - yeah yeah I know I'm not being forced and all that, but its quite difficult especially if these are important meetings and I am trying my best to be polite. So - -------- can someone help me with the best Japanese I can use to politely refuse drinks. Or, is it best just to take a few sips and leave some over? Thanks!

Ocean11 0
Sumimasen ga, kohi wo nomisugiru to koumon ga kayukunarimasu... I'm sorry, but if I drink too much coffee it gives me an itchy bumhole.
Ocean11 0
Nee-san, gomen. Kore wo nomu to shonben wo chibiru. I'm sorry love. If I drink this I'll piss me'sen.
sunrise 0
I tell people I don't drink coffee. (and it's true, I simply don't like it). then they'll want to give you green tea or ulon-cha. If you don't want it just ask for some water. They won't notice if you drink much of it or not.
scoobydoo 0
Good one sunrise, I'll try that. (And I don't drink tea or any other drink either)
Yuki's Passion 1
I wish a coworker next to me would quit drinking coffee - seems to have about 8 cups a day I enjoy drinking coffee but could never handle that much... Id have a nervous breakdown.
nzlegend 1
Sumimasen ga, kohi wo nomisugiru to hito wo koroshitaku narimasu. "If I drink another coffee I will feel the urge to kill someone"!
indosnm 0
just accept it and don't drink it. Its the similar to keeping your beer "cup" full when you don't want more.
Karnidge 2
Too right. It really bugs me when someone INSISTS to pour you a drink and they won't take no - so you take the tiniest sip of beer for them to fill the glass up again with 1ml of beer. Sheesh. Just seems really really naff.
rachael 0
Supposed to do that coy little hand movement as well if you're a gal. I'll have none of that nonsense.
BagOfCrisps 24
I noticed this peculiar custom - if you accepted all the drinks you'd be overflowing with caffeine. We learnt to do the tiny sip thing as well.
ProbablyaCrazyPerson 2
I got with the "dont drink coffee or tea, only beer" line. That stumps 'em. (although once I actually got some beer from it)
rachael 0
They'll find a way of giving you something. There is an art to politely declining though. Before I knew how to do it well I was "told off" for being rude in the way I spoke.
