Looks familiar but cant place a name to it. Will put on my thinking cap

Tsugaike Kogen

That it is. Named after (and co-developed by the owners of) Hunter Mountain ski area in New York, USA.   Over to you, Muikabochi.

Good job! It is indeed Kurohime Kogen Snow Park, which has a dog run, and which overlooks Lake Nojiri, home of the Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum, wherein is exhibited a life-sized model of a Naumann Elephant (not mammoth), the remains of which were excavated on the shores of Lake Nojiri.

Over to you, snowjunky.

Thanks Miuka - the drive from Myoko Kogen to Madarao, much of it along the shores of Nojiriko is very scenic.

Tis late here so I will post tomorrow morning

Same family as modern elephants, apparently, but different genus.

Naumann's Elephant, now extinct, was apparently in the same genus as the modern Asian elephant, but evolved separately in Japan after the land bridge to the continent was cut off.
