Shermanator 0
Hey folks I'll be moving to Tokyo before next winter and so will hopefully be able to get some good day trips in. I know a little about Yuzawa but heard about Hunter Mountain as well. Anyone here been there? Good day trip or is Yuzawa the better option? Good to be here. Read for a year or so every so often. Plunge now taken.
muikabochi 208
Hi Shermanator. Not been myself. I remember there was a good write up this last season: http://www.snowjapanforums.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/402615/Hunter_Mountain_Full_Review_dy.html I can only really pitch in with Niigata stuff. Ibadaki 0
Hunter is just one place whereas Yuzawa is lots of options. You only need one place for a day though and Hunter is worth a day.
Metabo Oyaji 71
Hunter is worth a day trip. Wouldn't spend a week there, but that's just me. Traffic should be a bit better than going to Yuzawa, anyway.
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
I enjoyed it for a day but wouldn't go back too often I don't think. So yes good for a day (or two) trip I think.
Karnidge 2
One of those "decent for a day" places. When I went it was pretty busy on a weekend probably due to the day trip thing.
Shermanator 0
Thanks folks as I thought reading up. Well it will definitely be one place I get to. Cheers.
A lawyer 0
I would say try and go on a weekday if possible. I know that applies to most places in terms of crowds but as this is a popular day trip from Tokyo it can get especially busy on weekends and be close to empty weekdays. iiyamadude 6
How far is that from "affected areas" in Fukushima?
Tubby Beaver 209
Its in Tochigi, right? Looking at the map, it isn't very far as the crow flies from the Fukushima coast and the Nuke Plant....about 95kms as the crow flies according to mapmyride
Metabo Oyaji 71
Looking at the last radiation map link on this page: http://www.snowjapan.com/e/japan-tohoku-earthquake/radiation-concerns.html One can zoom in on Hunter Mtn and environs. No readings reported at the ski area itself, but nearby locations in the mountains seem to range from 0.15-0.25 uSv/h. So maybe the ski area is somewhere in that range. There does seem to be a bit of a hot spot in Nasu-Shiobara-shi, on the other side of the range of hills from Hunter Mtn., with some schools and daycare centers near the base of the hills showing around 1 uSv/h. Perhaps, as is thought to have happened in Shizuoka, the hills there facing the power plant caught particulates that were being carried away from the plant, and they washed down the hillsides. (Warning: Amateur speculation on display.)
@tokyo 14
How sad it is we are talking about the threat radiation at a ski resort.
iiyamadude 6
It is sad, but the reality unfortunately. Thanks, yes was just looking at that map. Interesting. Yet, unsettling.
I'm Sexy 0
I used to work there for a short time. I like it. And yes weekends can be very busy.
Hitachi 0
I think it makes a good day trip and a change from the more obvious places in Niigata etc. Not really the sort of place you want to be at for a week though.
SKI 15
Off topic sort of but Hitachi, where abouts is your Hitachi?
grape 0
I used to live about 45 mins drive from there and had many a good day. It gets busy weekends but weekdays it is quiet and you can really explore. Got a few tips if anyone interested. Can't wait to get back to Japan in November.
