Think about this: How long can you go without alcohol?

Recommended Posts

I usually only have a drink one or two nights a week but would have no problem not drinking at all for long periods. I only drink when I got out. I never drink at home.

Same here.

Hardly ever drink at home just when I go out and even then it's just one or two.

Can't really remember the last time I "got drunk" it was a fair while ago.

I'm a bit confused here.

Why are/were some of you drinking in the first place? To get drunk? Because it's cool? Why?

I don't drink a whole lot, and not often, but when I do it's because I like it, simple as that.

I'm really not following what the point is of going from seemingly madly in love with beer to totally deserting it. Unless the person was an alcoholic trying to shake it.

because sometimes other things are important?

perhaps people are dieting? can't take alcohol? need to save money?

there are different reasons for people doing it.

OK so 1 or 2 beers a week is going to really make any difference to dieting or saving money?

I can understand why people give up alcohol for different reasons. However, thursday seemingly LOVED beer before this announcement. Just seems strange.

But whatever, it doesn't particularly matter! wave

He said why he wants to do it in he first post:

I am on 65 days now. Not a drop and I think I may continue for continuing sake

What part of that is difficult to understand?

confused bit more info won't go amiss.

I was loving the drink a bit much I think. Ended up drinking every day of the week, month in month out. Was beginning to wonder if I was an alcoholic or something. Then one day, just decided and here we are.

Having stopped drinking, been finding myself eating more. And instead of a beer gut, am really getting a mac gut or something.

Maybe getting back on the juice may help that, but for the time being, still enjoying being able to not drink at will.

Think he/she is throwing a hissy fit? wink

Good on you Thursday - keep it up. If you can go a year, will buy you that massive 2,000 calorie milkshake. Or not.

I went through something like that once thursday.

Then I realised that I actually enjoyed a drink or two, every now and again.

That's what I do now. And I enjoy it more than I did before. Look forward to it, but not in a MUST HAVE kind of way.

I would think that's the place you might end up in, especially as you did seem to like it so much.
Cutting it out completely purely to prove some kind of point to yourself would be silly billy - sounds like you have already proved the point.
Unless that's what you really wanted. (etc etc)

I know a lot of the Rugby guys do a 'detox' of sorts upon occasion - Papa did it for a month last year. I wouldn't say he was anywhere near verging on alcoholism but in 'the season' there are so many opportunities in the week to have a few drinks, and no one wants to be the first to leave and everyone wants to buy everyone a round - so in a group of a dozen or so men you can end up with a few messy nights a week. That much alcohol is not good for the body - it doesn't function well. It is heaps easier in this situation to say "Nup, no more, that's it ... I am doing a month alcohol free" Somehow the boys at the bar respect that and buy you a water...but if you say, "Nah not tonight guys" they are all "c'mon, just one - dont be rude...blah blah".

I get it.

I've never had to do that because I have never had that type of peer group and never drink alone.

But I did do a month alcohol free when I was liver cleansing - but I was also dairy, red meat and artificial additive free, so I don't suppose that counts as a war waged on alcohol specifically.

[ohhh...and I went alcohol free for each of my pregnancies and while breastfeeding - at one time I was still feeding #3 when I conceived #4 so it was more than 6 years without a drink!]

I get it too, now thursday has filled us in.

There have been a few times when I have had a bad hangover or too many parties in a time period and I'll cool off drinking for a while temporarily.

I literally can't remember how many times I've become completely paralytic from drinking. There's been one or two occasions where when I look back now I'm somewhat amazed I survived the night. And upon occasion my wife has had to put up with some pretty gross stuff like puking or peeing in the bedroom. I never start out the night intending to get that drunk and in recent years it's become very rare I get that bad. I don't need a drink to have fun and I rarely drink all that much at all but gosh I certainly have had my share of nights where I drank way too much.

Maybe we should start a thread on the craziest stuff you've done whilst drunk? wink

Ok

Will go first then

Got drunk with a mate and his Japanese friend who had his scooter with him. Asked if I could ride, and drunkenly tried it. Did it so well, that I rode off home instead of going back. Woke up next day with an apologetic email asking if he could have his scooter back.

Perhaps the most stupidest thing have ever done.

Well I'll start with one from when I was 16. I escorted a girl to her debutante and then we all went to an after party. At some stage in the evening someone told me I'd better go check on the girl I was with (she was only a friend not a girlfriend). So I went outside and she was on the ground passed out laying in her own puke and was not responding at all to a few slaps on the face to try and wake her. So someone with a car decided to drive her to the emergency. Chivalrous as I am I decided to go with her. Anyway I think they pumped her stomach or something and I stayed with her beside her bed. At some stage I too fell unconscious and supposedly wet myself. Anyway next thing I know I'm waking up with a very sore head in my bed at home!

Apparently a nurse had grabbed my wallet, found my name and managed to call my parents who came to the hospital and had to carry me to the car to get me home. My parents gave the hospital the number of the girls parents who then came and picked her up. Ahh to be 16 again!

woke up on the floor of the next door neighbours caravan in Spain, with the guy gently kicking me "saying I think you've got the wrong place sonny" - 1st boys holiday, Estartit in Spain, aged 16

Pissed all over the TV and DVD player - aged 25

Woke up bollock naked on the sofa with no recollection of how I got there- last month

I drink pretty much everyday. Nothing excessive, I just enjoy having a beer or three. Working in a resort environment doesn't help matters much - everyone is always up for a good time and you've got to join the party... not that I resist it much.

In Australia, I don't really go out to drink but have a few beers or glasses of wine at home every night, even when I'm working a 9-5 job. I just enjoy it.

I'm actually pretty surprised that a lot of SJ crew don't drink much at all.

When I'm travelling in places where it is difficult to drink alcohol, it's no problem for me to not drink for days or weeks at a time. But if there's booze around, hell yeah I'll have a few.

My motto is - Everything in moderation, including moderation itself.

And as long as someone's having fun and not hurting anyone, whatever tickle's their fancy is good with me.
