But in this case the hotel industry are shooting themselves and tourism in general in the foot. Just imagine if all the other world airlines left people to struggle, had families sleeping on airport floors with no support for days or weeks... And then imagine Qantas providing all stranded travelers with accommodation, meals and current information. Imagine the hotels making deals with the airlines to house those patrons with dignity and respect and charge Qantas just a little more than it cost to do so. Imagine if Qantas approached a market leader like Coles to provide sandwiches, drinks and fruit free of charge to travellers waiting in the airport terminal. Imagine the positive publicity. Imagine the satisfied and delighted customers who would return again and again. Imagine the dissatisfied customers of other airlines who would see the positive experience of Qantas customers and choose to fly with them next time. They would surely get good publicity, but would it be worth as much $$ as what they can all get now? After all, thnk of how many people still fly BA and hate them. Well I reckon it cost them countless thousands to produce that lovely choir advert that they keep updating all the time - bet that bought less loyalty than it would get them if they treated their customers the way they would like to be treated!!! Admittedly hotel's suddenly overcharging for rooms is a idiotic thing to do, but how do we know if its was planned before the eruption happened or not? I do feel sorry for the people stuck thousands of miles away from home, but come on, phone up your local embassy, get them to help transfer money from your or a family's bank. HelperElfMissy 42 Posted April 20, 2010 Share Posted April 20, 2010 I can imagine how rapidly it could deteriorate for a family stuck oversea's without travel insurance, or without cover from that insurance - or indeed bearing the up front costs of such an unforseen event before the insurer sorts themselves out. Most people can manage a contingency of a day or two - but for every day beyond that you find more and more people unable to cope. Just talked to my dentists secretary - she is also not sure why he has been effected in the US, but there have been flight path changes and re routing going on to get him home. Quite strange.
