BagOfCrisps 24
I've just done a fair bit of editing and adding a few more comments to the original post, so I'm afraid you're all going to just have to go back and read it again.

mina2 6
Interesting choices you made there. Not huge places lots of them, but as you said not regretting spending a day in each. Sounds like it was a splendid plan.
ILoveZao 8
Was the yakiniku 楓庵 (Kaedean)? Photo looks like and description also. I live it very much, it is quite famous!

When you get there, you go in and it seems like an old big Japanese-style living room. I don't know how many, but one big tatami room with about 6 low tables. That basically is the 'restaurant'. It just doesn't feel like a restaurant as such. But the food comes and it's really good. Apparently the place has an excellent reputation and people come from afar to check it out. ILoveZao 8
Ah, yes. It does have good reputation. It is reservation only also and so many people hear about it from friend and the reputation.
2pints-mate 0
I dont know what it was called but that deep fire-y bowl thing he brought in sure was hot. Very interesting place to eat. I wonder how it got started.

2pints-mate 0
No, TB, it was most definitely "yakiniku".
journey_man 0
Yakiniku rocks!
BagOfCrisps 24
Yes it was definitely yakiniku, and the best I have had. Anyway, here's an excite video taken at the top of the mountain during Snow Monsters lightup. Just to give you an idea http://www.snowjapan.tv/view_video.php?viewkey=0cefee4967c67ccb099d
Zaoman 0
Wow there has been an explosion of Zao-ness on the Forums of late. Great to see! And good to meet you guys as well if only for a very short time. Good to read your trip was a success.
Zaoman 0
Never been or heard of this yakiniku place though sounds good. Is it in between Zao and Yamagata?
BagOfCrisps 24
Well I'm no expert on the roads round there but we took the road going down by the gasoline stand, turned right, went on the little toll road and then it was another 5-10 minutes on narrow winding roads. So I suppose on a map yes it will be somewhere between Zao and Yamagata. It seemed to be well knowng among people in Zao so I'm sure if you ask someone they'll help out. ILoveZao 8
From the toll road, continue straight on road 53 which changes into road 167 for about 2 or 3km. There is a steep right turn in the road and you can see a sign on the left hand side just after. If you follow the sign for about 500m on narrow road and you will find it! If you ask Zao people I am sure someone will know.
