 八幡平観光の2007年3月期決算は売り上げ約6億2000万円、当期利益は約1900万円の赤字。同スキー場の売り上げは1993年度の約1億円をピークに06年度は約2500万円にまで減少した。八幡平ロッヂは今春から休業している。八幡平観光の工藤幹夫常務は「金融機関や県、八幡平市とともにスキー場存続を前提に事業再編を協議してきた。(市は断念したが)八幡平観光としても経営を引き継いでもらえる企業を探したい。今季もスキー場は営業する」と語る。

As far as I understand the domestic skier market has been decreasing dramatically since the days of the bubble. I'm surprised there are still so many ski resorts able to operate as it is. I'd reckon there will be many more closures over the coming years.

You are right GN there many resorts do have to close. Some big ones might even go like Arai. To be honest Japan doesnt need 500 resorts and although people hate line-ups, resorts cant make money without filling the slopes.

 

Most resorts dont own the real estate anyways that brings in heaps of money. Niseko accom aside has the resort ski side posted profits yet?

well the operators don't help there. They buy loads of season tickets at the very reasonable season ticket rate or lower since they'd be with the chamber of commerce or something, and then sell them to their guests.

 

Say a 10 day pass would normally cost 38,000Y

The operator will offer the season ticket for 10 days at say, 35,000, saving the guest 3,000

 

But hold on, the seson ticket costs 87,000 for the whole season (lets say 5 months or 150 days) so that works out at 580Y per day.

 

So IF there are guests for every day of the season, then the pass has a potential of turning over 15x35000 = 525,000.

 

Take out the cost of 87,000, then you have a nice little profit of 438,000 per pass courtesy of Niseko United.

Access will always kill them in the end. Look Canada has some better mountains than Whistler or Blackcomb but in the end it comes do to Access. If you can get people to it you can make money. There are quite a few resorts that should be closed if you just look at it that way.
