Cops aren't the same in all countries, nor are the laws or the systems supporting them - obviously.

In Oz we only have two tiers of Police - Federal and State. The Feds deal predominantly with Commonwealth and International issues, the State cops deal with all other stuff.

Also, a criteria of employment is they are almost never sited in one locale very long - several years and they're either moved or they themselves relocate for promotion purposes. This system prevents the small-town mentality and deters other issues (corruption, familiarity, etc).

Hollywood has made zillions out of parodying the system in the US e.g. the 'typical' small town cop who lives and dies in small communities.

It's the system that generally dictates the personality of the individual cop.

The seperation of judicial/enforcement and administrative branches of government usually prevents such problems, but no democracy is perfect, eh?

I don't know if that's quite right SZ. The cops I know in my town have been there a long time, 10 years+ that I know of. Some of the force is transient, for sure.

Are you talking about this from another thread?

I actually tried to 'rescue' one on the side of the road one night. The farkin thing near scratched me to death. A cop was driving by and spotted me wrestling with this koala down in a gully and stopped to ask me what I was doing.

At that point I though it was a fair question.

If that cop had just lent me his taser, I would've had the furry little bugger under control.

my financee won't pull over for cops at night until she gets to a petrol station with other people around. she's been intimtated by male officers late at night and in my mind is rightfully paranoid.
my point is simply that i don't trust them blindly. kentropolis was saying this, and i reckon it's ridiculous

Totally agree spook.

where did that post come from?

I knew a lot of police people both in the UK and HK. They are as savoury as one gets.

My pal's dad was a met sargeant. Drove a van with a huge dog in the back. Told us many a story of his encounters with the darker skinned people whom he called "Wxxs". Made us laugh at the time cos we were just schoolboys. On reflection, the stuff these pigs got up to was in the realm of police brutality videos. Not nice even thinking about them now.

The filth we have in HK are just as bad. I know a few bitches who patrol specifically looking for mainland women whom they'd stop for identity checks so they can feel up. OK, so these women are pros, but pros have rights too. And lessos in uniform are a real turnoff.

Fair enough.

When I asked what you did for a living. You said a "specialist function" in a bank. I thought maybe 'specialist function' was another name for a BANK ROBBER !

I had a few (quite a few) brushes with the law when I was a kid with no dad to kick my arse and too much spare time. Mostly trivial struff, nothing serious. I have to say that I was always treated with respect even though I was a cheeky, disrespectful little prick. I've never had reason to think badly of police based on my own personal experience.

Not all Police are of the nasty variety, but the arses really spoil it for those doing a good job. I have a few friends who are in the cops and they say exactly the same. One of them said that when he started he was determined to keep in touch with all his mates from b4 as he thought that one of the big probs was that cops just mainly hung out with other cops, unfortunately he has drifted to the dark side!! He's still a good guy tho!!

As an impressionable teenager, I overtook a pig van on my CX500. They came after me and pulled me over. The young pig, no older than myself, took a swing at me "cos you were being cheeky". His partner apologised and then they drove off. I didn't know how to complain then but if it happened today, I'd take him to the highest level.

Yeah, I hate that shit. People who are power hungry and go into the cops are definitely the bad eggs there. It annoys me as well when they think that they are above the law as opposed to enforcers of the law.

The story I told earlier about getting arrested was initially a "Breach of the Peace" charge. This is the most ambiguous charge ever and Police can basically fit it to any action they choose.

You certainly must have been impressionable as a couple of little incidents seemed to have made it impossible for you to actually use the word 'police'. Your overt disrespect in calling them only by 'filth' and 'pig' is somewhat amusing but a little disturbing at the same time. The only other people I have ever known to have such strong hatred of the police are inmates of prisons (I worked for 3 years in a max security prison many years ago).

The legal system here is simply terrible. I can only assume that the police have no idea or ability in collecting and processing forensic evidence as it seems that nearly all cases rely on a confession to go to trial. Of course they can hold you almost indefinitely until they get that confession they're after....
