  1. "Reggae, hip hop, rap, country western. I'd rather eat poo put bits of it in my ears and nose." Are you sure you want to write off entire genres of music? Classifying music by genre is convenient but I don't really understand it. "I am after mainly an Acoustic guitar (but a big one, not a small guitar)" You might be looking for Neil Young. I'd recommend 'Everybody Knows this is Nowhere', or 'After the Gold Rush'. 'Live Rust' is also really good. The first half is acoustic, the second half is grungy electric. Also try 'Highway 61 Revisited' by Bob Dylan. I'm really not
  2. Last call for the JALT conference in Kyushu this weekend. If anyone's going, there's going to be a really good 'live' / jam night at night on Saturday night after the JALT reception. I'll be playing (big) guitar in a band called Prince Rupert's Metal. I heard Cane might be in attendance too. And Kintaro's wife. (Just goofing around Kintaro)
  3. Both of those numbers seem really high to me. I wouldn't have guessed there were 30 000 bears here. Does anyone here take precautions (like bear bells) when in the BC?
  4. Could be a little tought to find, but check out Junko Yano--first album in particular. She's a piano player/singer/song writer who used to play clubs around Kochi City after graduating from high school. She landed a record deal a couple of years ago.
  5. Is that for environmental reasons Sunrise? A friend of mine stopped using toothpaste and just uses baking soda (or salt - I can't remember) because its more environmentally friendly.
  6. I don't think anyone means any disrespect to your wife, Kintaro. Besides, you ARE the one who brought her up. And you did it in the HOGS and HOT RODS thread.
  7. I think that's quite normal on this forum. Just keep it off the toothpaste thread
  8. The apparent interest in this thread has alluded me so far but maybe if I post something on here I'll get into it. Umm... ... I just buy Japanese stuff. I like the bottles that stand up on the cap. I don't recall seeing them back home.
  9. Clapton is the most over-rated guitarist in hisory. He had stopped making interesting music by the mid 1970's. I wouldn't even say his style is 'masturbatory'. I think it's just lame. He was sporadic in the 70's from drugs and woman problems. Things got a lot worse when he sold his soul and became a born-again Christian. I admit that I have bought a few of his albums over the years and sometime they're OK but for the most part he just recycles the same predictable solos over and over. Actually though, my friend who is of the same opinion saw him on TV and said that he suddenly came out
  10. That sounds like a pretty good scam. Much better than the 'ore ore' telephone scams I imagine. My friends like internet auctions but they usually buy relatively cheap items --ie a couple of 'man' at the most.
  11. Gus Van Sant's done some strange stuff recently. Have you seen "Elephant Gun" or "Gerry"? I liked his earlier work. Everyone should see "Drugstore Cowboy" with Matt Dillon and um... the chick from Boogie nights... what's her name??? Good sound track too.
  12. Quote: I said, "No way man-- No, my wife is not a man.
  13. My wife just got home and said "mata snow Japan. They probably think you're a big loser!" I said, "No way man--There are a bunch of people who post about the same amount as me. There's one guy who just hangs out on SJ all day." So she says "I'm sure one of them is the next serial killer." I wonder who it will be?
  14. Yeah, that's pretty sick shit. Here's a thought. When it isn't biology, maybe it's insecurity.
  15. We sould probably think twice before we "Throw off society's shackles and follow the part... that sticks out in front." However, we've all heard Misorano's sentiment before and it's a good one. I don't live that way but it eases any guilt that I might feel when dealing with temptation. Maybe it's just nature. How about you, Misorano? You're not actually the total slut that Spud makes you out to be are you?!
  16. I missed the end. I just assumed he killed himself right? Was that actually about Cobain specifically?
  17. That reminds me of Gus VanSant's recent movie, 'Last Days' where he chronicles this [censored]ed up rocker's last days. I would read the Cobain book but I couldn't even get through Van Sant's two hour movie.
  18. This forum has got a STEEP slant towards Nagano/Honshu, as opposed to Niseko. I think that Niseko's definitely got its pluses but there is no reason to go that far. Niseko is over represented by tour companies but there is a plethora of good places to ski in Nagano and elsewhere. You can arguably find better skiing on Honshu and the cultural experience will probably be more rewarding too.
  19. I like some Nirvana and Cobain also set a new standard as 'the perfect tragic rock and roll cliche' which is cool. Then he died tragically, which is tragic, but good entertainment and good for the media biz. In the 1990's though, it suddenly became the 'in' thing to be bad at playing the guitar and now it seems like there are a lot of 20 year olds singing mellow-dramatic crap about blood and sacrafice and who don't know how to play their instruments. I can imagine them in the recording sutdio. The 30-something weekend-amature-rock-star recording engineers are probably far better at the guit
  20. "crunching in a squater is such an indignant way to take care of business." That maybe so, but I'm pretty glad to live in Japan at times like that. We could start a new thread --'Unpleasant toilet experiences is developing countries'.
  21. I think Soub's brief mention of the Velvet Underground's first album ("The velvet underground and Nico") needs a little expansion. It's brilliant. It was recorded in a couple of days in New York and released in early '67. It's generally dark and grungy with poorly tuned instruments, screaching guitar feedback at times, and a heavy heroin influence. A perfect 'alternative' album. Some tracks sound excessively sweet but are dripping with sarcasm and dark undertones, with poorly tuned instruments. OK. You're probably thinking "Wow. That sounds like a terrible album! What the hell is
  22. I'm just going to recycle a few things that other people have said here. I don't know if this will help. Quote: Mate, Men are biologically not meant to be monogamous. It seems to me you've run into a situation where subconsicously you think your offspring would be better off popping out of another womb, with different DNA. Throw off society's shackles and follow the part of you that sticks out in front. It'll lead you in the right direction. Quote: So, what’s the plan, divorce your wife and get married to your coworker? And if sometime in the future you fall in love w
  23. dire strainghts at the moment. Mark Knopfler is such a good and under-rated guitarist.
  24. A very measured response O11. I'm impressed but I was hoping for a little more entertainment.
  25. Publications are more or less just as important as having a Masters degree so you'd have to be lucky to find a Uni job without them. The thing is, there are so many minor national journals in Japan that publishing is pretty easy. A lot of very unimpressive research or just plain literature reviews get published so there's really no reason not to have a few publications if you're aspiring to Uni work.
