they are tremendous. the icecream is sensational too. have you tried the 'nama' chocolate in japan? its awesome! especially the stuff i bought in hokkaido (as an omiage). those thin bars of meiji chocolate remind me heaps of the hollow easter eggs from back home.

Patrol in different countries
rigor mortis replied to 0151's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
in new zealand ive never struck them. however when i went boarding there i never went too far from the groomed slopes. Japan seems to have heaps of out of bounds areas. didnt notice much in NZ. I think it mostly comes down to japan being over-cautious and NZ being under-cautious. -
Room temperture
rigor mortis replied to gamera's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Im on my fourth cold this winter! not sure why, maybe cause i teach kids all day. or maybe cause of the air-conditioning heating (dry air). i was only recently told that, so now i dry all my washing infront of the aircon to get the humidity up. back home we always use the open fire or wood burner - cant beat em!! if its cold in the morning here, i blast the aircon for 30 mins before i rise. -

an interesting documentary. pretty long, but quite enthralling if you are into a good old fashioned conspiracy theory. http://www.shoutwire.com/viewstory/5888/Bush_Planned_9_11

chair lifts
rigor mortis replied to rigor mortis's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
not sure if you're supposed to, but you can pull them up if u want. -
the most comfortable chair lift i have ridden is suginohara, highest chairlift. - the windshield at the front (which automatically comes up as you pull into the oriba) - the pegs to rest your weary legs on - the kind of catchment area at the back by your arse, so you dont drop shit as you are doing what you do during the pleasant journey up - the ergonomically moulded seats sure beats a T-bar anyway. ps. anyone know how to spell 'ergonomic' properly? is it even a word??

gardening / growing vegetables

The japanese just pick there cucumbers early, if they let them grow, they too could have great monsters like mine. but admittedly they taste much better and crisp when they are picked early. the reason mine got so big was i lost them amongst the jungle of leaves and my incessant tomato plant. i was astonished to see a fully grown cucumber, i tell you. -
Sticky Wickets

good old NZ still has plenty of the sticky wickets. the sensor ones at niseko are shit. they kept catching me in the shins -
Rails and things
rigor mortis replied to SomeSnowboarder's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
i have recently started riding the odd rail/box. cruising along straight i generally have not too much trouble. however, the couple of times ive tried getting a little fancy and going with my board perpendicular to the rail ive taken some serious hits. how many more serious hits do u think ive got before i can pull that kinda stuff comfortably? does it come pretty fast? -
Quote: how can you compare?? Some might find it easier on a board and some on skis. Even people who can ski or board at an equal skill level might be split between those who say a board is easier and those who say skis are easier. It comes down to personal preference and how you view it mentally. its quite obvious that opinions will differ. thats life. some say niseko is a crappy skifield, others..... my question is aimed at those who can board and ski at the same level. they must have a preference. personally i think rails suck too. but i saw some dudes ripping it up - made me wonder.

British English is sexiest
rigor mortis replied to brit-gob's topic in General off-topic discussions
something has gone wrong there. Kiwi english cant be the back runner. I think they must have mistaken our prime minister Helen Clark for a man and used her as the example of kiwi english. the poll is redundant. -
gardening / growing vegetables

i had a huge success with chilli's last summer. very easy to grow and in a range of varieties. i also grew cucumbers. not the pussy little japanese styles, but great whoppers! I was also fighting off the tomatoes too. On the disappointing side, my celery was a complete disaster and my spinach bolted early and went to seed before i could enjoy its pleasures. I also grew a peanut, for obvious novel interests. after about 6 months i proudly harvested 9 peanuts! which tasted very ordinary. -

End of season advice...
rigor mortis replied to ShayDn's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
okutadami maruyama is pretty fun for spring boarding. dosent open until April cause of too much snow. however its quite a journey to get in there - propped in a valley, between a couple of big ass mountains. (niigata prefecture) closest shink station is Urasa - from there u get a shuttle which is either free or very cheap. -
Any more BIG dumps left?
rigor mortis replied to 1's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
there's an enormous low moving slowly over western siberia now. its expected to reach the japan sea in about 10 days. then dump heavily on niigata prefecture. march snowfall estimates are the most for 20 years -
Gala was just on the news
rigor mortis replied to rach's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
i went up there monday. pretty rugged weather. snowing all day, little bit of quite nice fresh snow,. but the fact that it was sprinkled over a rock hard glacier meant it was a fairly average day. gondola was moving along nicely.
