  1. Sakebomb: What sort of policy are you after? i.e. Are you on the National scheme, and looking for something to prop you up if you get sick? Or are you looking for total coverage that will refund you the full amount? If you are on the National scheme (or a work scheme) then Gams suggestion of aflag etc may be best. I've heard of a company that does cover you in Japan (but can't for the life of me remember the name ). It allows you to get out of the national scheme, but when we checked it out it was very expensive. If I remember the name I'll update this post.
  2. I wish. People might me more inclined to pay if they get a free tipple from the NHK man when he comes to collect the loot.
  3. Yep! The wife, Me and the 4 little ones.
  4. Don't seem to come up here as the reception is so bad. Saw a truck with NHK written on the side one day, and thought "here we go." But all they did was raise an antenna from the roof of the van, take a measure, and leave.
  5. Suprised how little it hurt. Maybe it varies from doc to doc. Got ours done at the Ear , nose throat place. 18,000yen and the kids have to go back for a 2nd shot.
  6. farq: Just watched some of the game on TV. Keio started off well enough, but must have fallen away. BB: I played for about 12 years over here, finally giving up last Nov, as the body couldn't take it anymore. Rugby teammates are always some of the best mates around no matter where you are.
  7. fjef: Buying your sister sexy lingerie to too gross to even think about. Literature or sporting goods depending on what she's into.
  8. You could do it tongue in cheek style, to take a poke at some of the crap English t-shirts over here. I heard of a guy who printed the Japanese for "don't wind past this point" (from a role of film) on his t-shirt. Japanese came up to point out how silly it was. Made for interesting conversations. Once had a student show up the the airport to fly out to the US, with one of the "F_CK" t-shirts on. Completely oblivious.
  9. One of the worst forms of bullying in Japan is to isolate/shun a person. There is some physical bullying, but the greater problem is the kids who refuse to go to school as they have no friends there. Being alone seems to make a lot of Japanese feel very uncomfortable.
  10. Quote: It's even more annoying when they take your money out of your salary for parties, and then spend it on junk food and junk drink that you wouldn't put in your mouth if they paid you. I can beat that one O11. They decided to fill some of the rooms in the above dormitory with Chinese Students. They then came to all the teachers and were saying how hard life was for these poor chinese students, and how expensive Japan was. They asked us all to give a little of our paycheck to help out these students. Turns out that the Chinese Students were being charged about 35,000yen a month to l
  11. Don't think so. It's that big new home center/supermarket on the left (greenish color) as you come into Omachi (about 2KM before Jusco). I think it's open late, so you could call in on the way up to Hakuba.
  12. Hotel website is at: Niseko Park Hotel Japanese only but you can see a few pics.
  13. Raw horse meat is a treat if it has not been frozen. Also had some good chicken tataki (almost raw). Was worried about salmonella at first, but everyone was tucking in. Only thing I like to be cooked really well is pork.
  14. There's a few small ones in "Cainz" in Omachi for about 30,000yen.
  15. Market Research doesn't seem to be a big thing for some companies. More like the boss thinks "this is a good idea", and none the ass-kissing underlings have the balls to say no. Worked for a company that built a boarding school for drop out kids in one of the most rural areas in Japan. They were expecting 400 students, but never got more the 50. And now there is are two 7F dormitorys sitting almost empty (tallest buildings for 50KM in any direction)
  16. BB: Added a not there Quote: but another kiwi put in him in his place by saying that Japan should concentrate on scoring a try against the All Blacks in a world cup before submitting their intention to get involved in the bidding OUCH!!!! Low blow there. That Judo call was a bit rough, I was watching it live and it sure seemed an ippon to me (no expert mind you). Thing is where you have human refs, you get human mistakes. (Not a good time to be a Kiwi eh?) My biggest problem with the bid (and I know many people will disagree), was that Ex PM Mori was in charge.
  17. Try this: Valid from Apr 1 so I don't know how reliable it is.
  18. Intro: PM me before you head up and I'll get the latest one for you. Many JR timetables are changing from Dec 1-10 as they move to a winter schedule.
  19. oo: NZ was s'pose to be sub hosting the 2003 WC, but one of the conditions was to have clean stadia (in terms of advertising). In a colossal fu_k up, NZ could not guarantee this and lost the sub hosting rights.
  20. INTRO: Current timetable as follows: (Sorry about the margins) Valid until end Nov.
  21. O11: If you head down the court house they'll have a whole room of them at dirt cheap prices. I dunno if Matsuyama has a HP up, but this is what we used to look at in Miyazaki Saibansho Take a look at the 農地物件一覧. I used to go down to the courthouse every couple of months as the have a room where you can view all the documents etc. Great deals if you havetime on your side to wait for the dream property to come along.
  22. Great things these wives aren't they? When you start up you worry about things on a daily basis ("Shite, did I make enough today"), but now I get a nice little print out at the end of each month that tells me where we are. After working for yourself I think it'd be pretty much impossible to go back to working for someone else. O11: Have you been checking out the banruptcy sales at the court house. Real bargains down there.
  23. O11: We don't as yet. We just run everything through Yayoi software, and it gives us all the papers to take to the Tax dept. My wife does the books (it allows us to pay her a salary too). I've heard that it's a good idea to get an accountant though. 20,000yen a month + extra at tax time is the going rate for a few guys I know. With the farm idea, doesn't it all come down to zoning. I've heard that changing no-chi to taku-chi can be a pain in the ass. Still doing something you enjoy would make it worth all the hassles.
