vegetarian`s in hakuba
Oyuki kigan replied to connackers's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Cooking in Japan is vegetarian heaven. Eating out in Japan is vegetarian hell. -
Japanese fashion (fascism) does nothing for me. Nor does the stuff in North America, for that matter. Are the thugs still wearing their baseball caps to the side over there?

Salomons, eh. Stiff boots. Maybe thats why the flows work for you. Because its hard to get the precise fit that strap bindings give with flows, maybe your stiff boots compensate for that. And having comfortable feet is the most important thing. So if it works for you, rad. I can't ride boots that stiff myself. I got some 32s that work good for me. I liked them so much i got a new pair this year. I'll try them out this week.

his acting was so subltle i didn't notice it.

Sorry Dear Britain, but i have to disagree. Sure, some of the the designs may be hyped, but there is a reason almost nobody rides for flow. And why no-one i know of on the burton team uses the burton step-ins. Pros can choose what they ride, and regardless of what they get paid, nobody wants to ride crap that doeesn't work (actually, a charge i have heard leveled at flow from many people i know). I have only tried flow once, and they were ok, but nothing special. If you have good boots (the first thing you should go all out for out of all your gear), then there should not be a problem w

I was just thinking about him in another post. The guy has made many movies and is celebrated in western film circles. What am i missing? I find most of his stuff a waste of film (especially Battle Royale). Does anyone here like his work? Or know anything about him and why he is such a big star in Japan (for something other than a knack for dressing up in ridiculous costumes, i presume)?

-Thrashin' -Goonies -Toire no Hanako-chan and does anybody actually like Beat Takeshi's films? Almost everything i've seen i hate. Battle Royale had to be the biggest waste of film ever (yes, even more than 'The Toxic Avenger'). I think Hanabi came close to being OK, but does this guy have any redeeming qualities?

In ancient Japan, the Emperor Tenno decreed that it was unlawful to kill any animal, keeping up with then in-vouge buddhist teachings regarding respect for life. That lasted for about 300 years, until a shogun (i think) revised it so people could eat fish and birds, but no land animals (that lasted another 300 years, although monks made rabbit an exception). Even then, fish was consumed on a fairly modest basis. Of course, this is just what i read, i could be wrong.

Thats great that the places you have been have been so accomodating. Is she OK with fish? In my experience, it is almost impossible to get any reasonable amount of japanese restaurant food without fish, because almost anything simmered or in a sauce or soup contains katsuobushi-dashi (bonito stock). All miso soups and noodle soups are pretty well off limits. Same with ramen. Hell, even when you order cold tofu, its usually served with the fish flakes on top (although thse can be avoided if you ask). -
Lens colours
Oyuki kigan replied to Victor's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Mirrored lenses are great for sunny days, clear for night skiing, and yellow/orange/rose for flat light. Or so i've been told. -
The best spam mail ever was sent to my ex-girlfriend's account. It said "Smash things with your HUGE dick!" I use it for my personal e-mails now.

My top 3 Whitewater (Nelson) Lake Louise (Banff national Park) Fernie (Fernie). Also, Kicking Horse (Golden) and Red Mountain (Rossland) are also supposed to be very good. All of these places are in the interior, as i don't know the coast that well. -
vegetarian`s in hakuba
Oyuki kigan replied to connackers's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Apparently, Hakuka is also home to to one of the best Mexican restaraunts in Japan. I'm not sure if they have vegetarian or not, but sak around for it. At the pension i stayed at (the Penke Panke) i told them in advannce i was vegetarian, and they tried to accomodate me and my girlfriend somewhat. The problem is most Japanese people don't seem to have a strong grasp of what 'vegetarianism' entails. -

Well,i don't think racism is just always negatively meant. To me, every time someone oogles at my 'gift' of being able to use chopsticks or pronounce 'Ogenki desu ka', that is racism. I know that they see it as a compliment, but it gets on to me that the think that their culture is so 'difficult' for foriegners to understand, that to master a little is like a monkey performing a math equation. Or thats how it feels at least. And i have been warned (by Japanese people) not to get too good at Japanese, or then people will treat me suspiciously. So i think racism exists very strongly in Japan,

Skiing under lifts the POLL
Oyuki kigan replied to peaker's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Well, i'll put in my two cents. I was busted once for riding virgin pow under a lift in japan. I did not know it was against the rules at that point. The area under the lift was on the side of a run and not blocked off, but there were fences extending out into the run on either sides of the towers. So i went in and out between the towers and poached the goods. All of the sudden, loudspeakers went off, and people were yelling. When i got to the bottom of the hill, some angry liftlees came running out and tried to take my pass. When they saw i was a gaijin, they backed off. I asked them why -
