Having skied in many places around the world, the one thing that could be said about most Japanese resorts the snow is some of the best I've been on. However there lacking every place else lift systems, places to stay, food and shopping. When I look at these facilities compared to other major resorts around the world they Japanese resorts are just not there. There a few places that may be able to get part of the foreign business(Niseko, Hakuba). I know Niseko has been making a major effort to come up to international standards. That being said most places in Japan will have to rely o

Switching to skis.

Switched to tele's a few years back. You know free your heel and all that good BS. It was like starting to ski all over again. Still don't totally feel comfortable dropping a knee on steeper stuff. Legs get tired quicker. Have had lots of fun. Plenty of face plants it's real easy when your heels are not locked down. I have never looked back. Dan give skiing a go it can be lots of fun. -

I may have posted before but it's worth putting out again. Niseko Avalanche report is available on the Niseko Now reports. If you see Mr Shinya works at gate 1 in the AM you should thank him for the excellent report that gets put out. -
Mixed Onsens are great. Get to spend time with the wife and kids.

Do the guides in Japan have any certifications. I know in Germany and Austria to be a guide you need to be certified through the bergfuehrer program. For what its worth it at least lets the client know there is some level of competency. -
Well what is the most you wold pay? Me I'm not willing to pay more then $200usd for a room. I would much rather ski. In Japan there seems to be a lot of pay by the person. I was looking at one place for a family of 4 the price quickly shot up to close to $500 a night . If it was me and the wife it was possibly doable. This was not at Niseko by the way.

quattro replied to jeffysonia's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
If your looking to go tubing near Sapporo try going to Takinouecho Sakuragaoka resort. It's maybe 45min from downtown. They have tubes, two or three courses and a lift their. Also they have a real beginners Ski slope. Look in the resorts section here -
