I get a cold nose anyway, and the jolt of a cloud of cold pow coupled with the swish sound of the light snow sprinkling my face is like a double shot of life at its purest. May you once know the power of the face shot, Ocean...
  2. Anybody skied in deep enough pow that they have difficulty breathing through their nearly endless faceshots? I've been lucky enough to have this problem a small handful of times (mainly right after interlodge in Utah...how cool is it that it's actually ILLEGAL to go outside due to avalanche risk). Oh the irony - one can choke on the very substance that causes one such complete happiness...
  3. Whew, just read this whole thread from March... Good stuff, for the most part, snowriders have good taste, i guess. Its cool to me how much ski porn can affect music taste. I listened to Dr. Octagon years ago, but it only when Ski Movie 3 was released did I get this unhealthy obsession with Deltron 3030. Kid Koala opened for Radiohead during their last American tour, too. Swollen Members, Slightly Stoopid (or anything off the ex-Sublime members Skunk Records label), and Supergroove (now-defunkt Kiwi Band that had a few songs on msp's "There's Something About McConkey) all are way up

I spent part of a season there a few years ago, and I could've gone back this year?!? Now I'm chillin here in Japan, hoping I made the right decision. Whatdya think?

Quote: Originally posted by nekobi: i could see white capped hakuba from sugadaira last weekend. heard you could also see the snow on the northern nagano mountains, but cant remember if it was shiga or madarao or noz... Yup, I saw what looked like quite a bit of white on [what I think was] the Yaridake ridgeline NW of Kamikochi on the Gifu/Nag border. Weekend was good, but I wish I was making the trip into Nagano to chase freshies intstead of to [poorly] play soccer. Less than 7 weeks 'til Niseko... I say we have a concerted effort to make a all-Japan snow dance at midnight on Hallow
  6. dec 21-jan 5...with bells on. just met a fellow sj boardmember last night at a white stipes show in nagoya, and fattwins, he bought your x-screams! tis a small world, you guys are everywheres!
  7. With a helmet, what happens to all those cool red welts from branches smacking your face? I know I'm a complete idiot for writing this, but I feel I'm like those last hockey players that got grandfathered into not wearing helmets. I've never been seriously injured on skis, and this fact, unfortunately, comes into my mind often before pulling stuff off. A few years ago I was in a university big air comp in New Zealand when I decided to pull a trick I'd never tried before off the huge (to me) 61 ft tabletop. Misjudged, spun wrong, and nearly nailed an advertising banner off the s
  8. I like this percentage deal. I've been skiing for 87% of my life, and maybe 98% of the time I could walk (the year I could walk, I skiied). But I was pretty poor until some friends of mine, who just discovered skiing, started talking about Glen Plake. I was like, "who's that?" they gave me a funny look and were embarrassed for me because I didn't know, then a competition ensued that improved me greatly. Now I just need to grow a pair to get better...
  9. "An estimated 10 million California voters cast ballots in the special election, 30 percent more than voted in the governor's race that reelected Davis last year and the biggest turnout for any non-presidential contest in state history, according to the Field Research Corp. Political analysts said the lion's share of the higher turnout was coming from disaffected voters galvanized by Schwarzenegger." --from onenews.nzoom.com/ Fall1998: I remember sitting in my college dorm room when I got a call from my girlfriend in Minnesota - I couldn't believe what she had just said. "Jesse Ven
  10. Coincidently, I'm in the middle of "Stupid White Men" right now. I've seen his films "The Big One" and "Bowling for Columbine," and have since been undecided about both his views and his approach. (I suppose the fact that I'm thinking about it fulfills the goal of the muck-raking tradition...). In the introduction of "Stupid White Men," Moore goes a bit of a long-winded, far-fetched tirade blaming the current poor state of the world on "theft" of the American Presidency by good ol' Dubbya. I opposed the means by which Bush rose to power (there are some especially disturbing hints of co
  11. Does anyone have schedules for ferries departing for Hokkaido from Nagoya (or anywhere else near Gifu) or Aomori? I haven't been able to find a website, and my Japanese is less than stellar, especially on the phone. Thanks for the help.
  12. all the gear in the world...none to ski on: IN JAPAN: volkl ultra carvers 190 (98-99) [stripped mounting screws] - I use 'em anyway pre m5b (93-94?) w/ voile tele bindings [practicaly too skinny and straight to ski on] technica explosion 8's (98-99) [10cm crack] garmont veloce (00-01??) [i suck at teleing] 15,000km AWAY @ HOME: K2 MSLs 200 (96-97) Dynastar G9s 203 (96-97) ho-hum, guess I'll have to drop a bunch on some new gear, eh? Volkl AX4s make me salivate profusely...

  14. Yeah, terrain, size and vertical is completely relative. I grew up skiing in Colorado, home to [now] over 2100 hectacre Vail. But I lived in Alta, Utah for a winter, and would gladly trade a tiny section of that mountain for all of Vail. If any one truly knows the Supreme Bowl of Alta, they know what I'm talking about.
  15. I can't remember the first time I skied... My dad tells me he went down the mountain backwards holding my Hart Gremlin tips together. Despite my nightmares about Gremlins during my childhood (completely unrelated to skiing...that was one damn scary movie when you're four. Those things still give me a bit of the creeps), I still find myself skiing...just hit the 20 year mark.
  16. Fjordland, NZ. One of the largest national parks in the world, and some sick, sick mountains. Close second: BWCA/Quetico Provincial Park I have yet to visit the Andes or the Himalayas, though...
  17. Quote: Originally posted by Ocean11: Hell, ILiveToSki probably is gay him/herself And if he's serious, I'd just feel sorry for the person. I personally feel sorry for him because he's Canadian, though. Have you heard how those people talk? It's funny...
  18. Boots are both the best and worst thing in ski equipment. Absolutely necessary to have them fit right, and you never want to give them up when you find a pair that fits. That's why I ski in a pair of technica explosion 8's that have a major crack in 'em. I dread buying a new pair...
