  1. go fat and you'll never go back! i agree with everyone, longer... i'm only 156cm tall, but my skis are 170cm and 106 at the waist... makes for easy work of the powder, you wouldn't think it, but very nimble in the trees, it is super easy to make shorter turns if you want to, even easier than carving short turns on the groomed!
  2. go to this site, the 03/04 seth pistols are only 34,800 - i bought my big stix from this shop in kutchan near niseko... but they are 169 (good length for me ) http://www.spotaki.co.jp/ski2003freeski.html keep your eyes on this shop, they have really good sales!
  3. i don't know where capt stag is, must be working (strange... ), but you can trust me when i say he loves them. he barely rides his candides... when i'm wanting to swap the big stix 106 for my twins, he's still trucking on those things. i like my fatties, but after listening to capt stag, i wish i had pistols (they come in my length too now - midget)
  4. i agree that patrol vary from resort to resort... Quote: I'm all for the patrol stopping people from doing things that they shouldn't be doing. Isn't that how many accidents happen anyway? absolutely, although there is a difference between stopping people from doing what they shouldn't be doing, and stopping people from excercising their own common sense to make decisions for themselves. saying you can't go anywhere that is "off the course" is a little extreme... and what i mean by that is a friend of mine was skiing with his son on the 5m of powder left ungroomed ON EITHER SI
  5. i seem to be making more posts today than i have this entire new year... first place, treble cone in wanaka, new zealand. that was about 5 years or approximately 150 ski days ago... first time to ever see snow and enrolled in a group lesson by captain stag who was my boyfriend back in those days. the gear: white stormtrooper like rear entry boots and straight skis from the university recreation centre, rain pants from a friend (boy, were my legs wet at the end of the day!) and my brand new ski jacket. that seemed like a long time ago... now i have three pairs of ski
  6. i think patrol bashing is more about the fact that it doesn't seem like they do a decent job. at our local resort, instead of being out there and keeping things safe like snowglider describes above, they hang out in the buildings, only coming out if someone is hurt or if they are putting up ropes and stuff - or rotating their shifts... on the other hand, the patrol at hachimantai seem to be more proactive... amazing as it may seem, you actually see patrollers out in groups skiing/snowboarding and having fun! what a concept! i have respect for patrol, but at the same time, they have to earn
  7. got myself a knee brace on the weekend after bunging my knee again... it was slightly discounted too, although captain stag reckons it's not really something you wait to buy on sale not that i was any good anyway, but i think i'll save my knees for the powder and maybe forget about trying table stuff (good excuse really, i don't have to admit i really suck )
  8. this might sound like a silly question, but i honestly would like to know the answer... how do you die of suffocation 3 hours after being rescued? does that mean he was alive when they rescued him, but becuase of injuries sustained, he still died of suffocation? a bit of a shock to hear the news, and more than a little worried it was a friend until we read the later post above. captain stag and captain A dug some snow tests on the weekend at geto and found a very weak layer 60cm deep...
  9. done 19 days so far... hoping for at least 50 this season (since last season got cut short at 45)... a bumper february where i take various days off to make a five day weekend and a four day weekend should help!!
  10. had a lookie at the video gallery and didn't see any new ones for this season... get cracking everyone!!! working on a short vid now - hopefully i'll be done by the end of this week hooray for the snow (finally!)
  11. the big stix are pretty light. mounted with marker bindings, they don't weigh much more than my powairs with rossi axial bindings. oops, my whole point for replying to this thread was to say that my g3 skins had no problem hooking over the tips of both sets of skis, but i just remembered that touque's big stix are a season newer. anyways, my skins were bought to fit my powairs (before i got the 106 bigstix) and i have to admit, they aren't all that great on my bigstix. they do let me get up a slope, but there is sometimes a bit of sliding involved. having said that, i still need a bit
  12. captain stag has been trying on those boots for quite a while (they have a range of sizes for you to try, and when you decide to buy, they order them in - or that is what we think), and as it turned out, some friends went and bought 2 complete sets of skis, boots, bindings etc and told the guy we recommended the shop, so we got a major discount on the boots (as a thank you)... we think of it as a free pair of really good footbeds. what great luck
  13. it'll be all that mayonnaise they stick on everything... eating some carrot sticks at school (i like them) and was asked if i had mayonnaise... i said no, so apparently i was on a diet
  14. really? what if 5km feels ok...? i kinda knew i was pushing it a bit, and skiing is definately the priority, but i tend to do that... i always had the plan that i would enter the run, pay, train and see how my knee went, and at any sign of things playing up, i would quit - i promised captain stag... ill try the squats - they dont have a bar at the gym though, so maybe with no weights - one of my favourite exercises though, used to be able to do it with quite heavy weights... anyway, if the info helps, the pain in the knee changes, like the pain is sometimes on the outside, sometime
  15. Quote: where you been surfing? taneichi, the very northern part of iwate... i have a question for anyone who can give me some good advice... got a bit of a bung leg from going a bit too big over a table back in april, knee went pop, was very painful, and now it is still achy and niggly. i have been working it at the gym, taking it easy with that knee but pushing it at the same time if that makes any sense at all... i've avoided running but have been using the treadmill the last couple of weeks and running about 5km cos i have to run 10km in october for the local marathon (with a my en
  16. i'm not worried about weight at all, hence the body fat percentage since the lower your body fat, the more lean muscle mass... personally, i think what i am doing (even if it is slow and excruciatingly hard work) will definately work. besides, what girl wants huge muscles. running, interval training, working all the muscle groups... lifting heavier weights with lower reps and lighter weights with higher reps to failure should do something, it's about getting stronger and toned... anyways, sorry, i must not have been clear about what my goals were the first time.
  17. i'm trying to put on weight, not cos i'm skinny, but hopefully because i'm putting on muscle. i have a goal of getting my body fat down to below 20% how accurate are the body fat measuring thingees at the gym... i tried it twice, two weeks apart just to see... and apparently i'd increased my body fat. suspicious since i have been lifting weights, doing lots of cardio, going surfing in the weekends and eating pretty well... i don't think i trust them!
  18. i thought it would stand to reason you wouldn't use the clips from the video gallery because of the whole format issue... i thought you were going to get people to send in tapes and stuff... but anyways... our movie has now been stamped out on dvd, with menus and stuff too... it starts with a very important warning, then a dramatic beginning, location shots, people in the movie shots, beacon practice/rutch block test segment and then into people's segments with a smattering of other stuff in here and there, a wee segment of the free trip to sahoro, a crash segment, credits (wher
  19. how many mm (or cm) underfoot on those skis, fattwins? lighter touring bindings? yeah, would be good but i figure if you gotta take your skis off to slap on your skins anyways, clicking into the trekkers are the least of your worries. a bit more versatile too cos i can use them with my other skis as well
  20. our last japanese season (well, till we come back at some later stage in our lives!) do lots more backcountry touring (getting two season passes this year, one for geto, one for hachimantai) so we can actually use the skins and trekkers and stuff we bought last season like everyone else, avoid buying more ski gear (but i really do need new outerwear...) spend more time in the park especially since last season was cut short... get way more than 50 days this season ski ski ski make an even better ski movie than this year and finish it before we leave japan at the e
  21. we talked about it...snowjapan put up the video gallery, for a time there, we were all madly submitting our videos so we could share our madness with everyone else... so what now? who is making or has made their ski movie for last season? we haven't quite finished yet, just a few last minute additions and it'll be done - about 50 minutes long... the movie debut will be later this month with everyone in the movie getting a complimentary copy on dvd... should be fun, can't wait
  22. i have chosen to not look at people's technique anymore, it is just to painful to watch... all that swinging, it's only a matter of time before someone hurts themselves. i would make a kindly suggestion, but don't want to come across as a know it all and the numerous people who work there and stand and do nothing except straighten towels and stuff should be doing it anyways as for my friend, it really is a lost cause - funny thing is, she's the biology teacher and where did you find that picture of me. luckily i have stopped wearing g-strings and am back on my asi
  23. so i've been going to the gym after school for like 2 hour stretches cos captain stag is off working and takes the laptop so i am pretty bored (and we live in the inaka) a teacher at school, female and 25 too has also been going. complaining that she hasn't lost any weight since going to the gym, i suggested going a little harder and upping the difficulty of her workouts, since she was confused as to why i worked up such a sweat and she didn't, and me thinking 30 minutes of cycling at a leisurely pace was prolly not enough for her goals. the suprise reply to this was, but if i work
  24. Captain Stag, of all the videos to link to, did you really have to link to last year's crummy digi-cam clip?
  25. find another hobby that takes up as much time as skiing and then before you know it, it'll be winter again!!!!
