Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 27cm Posted on Sunday 8th December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Nozawa is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall on the top Yamabiko runs this morning and a nice cold temperature of -6C, with a snow depth of 65cm. They are labelling conditions as 'powder', and I would expect some nice conditions up there this morning. We got a bit of snowfall down at base and village level as well, perhaps 5-10cm or so in places. No further runs opening up just yet. The resort will certainly be getting more of the upper part of the mountain open as soon as they can, so we obviously need a bit more snow for that to happen. Hopefully by this time next week we'll see some big changes. For tomorrow though, the sun should be back along with milder conditions. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . 12cm of new snow is being reported from the top Yamabiko area of Nozawa Onsen this morning and a cold -6 degrees as of 8am. Snow down to the village as well and it is still snowing this morning with snow forecast now for the day and through until Monday. So hopefully we could be on for a good dump of snow and more of the resort will very soon be able to open. For the moment operations are unchanged this morning. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Nozawa reporting 30cm of fresh snow up top on Yamabiko and 25cm on Uenotaira runs this morning, along with cold -7C temperatures. Needless to say, powder conditions. There's not much to see up top with poor visibility but the people getting out there should be rewarded with great snow conditions. The resort is still not reporting snow depth on lower runs, presumably just because they aren't open, but we have had another layer on the runs at base though there isn't enough to open yet. It is snowing now though and should be throughout the day and into tomorrow. We are all hoping that it won't be long before more of the mountain can open, though the snow does look like it will probably be finished sometime tomorrow with a chance of sun on Tuesday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa, where the resort are telling us of 26cm of new snowfall on the top runs where the official snow depth is now 130cm. More snow down on lower slopes and base as well, though it does not look like more of the mountain will be open today so lifts and courses remain the same. At least for the moment. Light snow at the moment though the local forecast does tell us to expect less today and perhaps even some clearing up. Tomorrow seems to be a mix of cloud and a chance of clearer weather. After the poor visibility of the last few days on mountain, it will good to get a chance to see more up there. There's much fewer people around early today, so should be a lot of new snow to discover. I'll let you know how it was! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 34cm Posted on Saturday 14th December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . More of Nozawa Onsen is open this morning. The Uenotaira quad and the Skyline connecting lift are both operating this morning, with the Uenotaira course area now open - over 10km of course open to slide down now. OK back to yesterday. The winds calmed down yesterday and at around 1pm the Gondola started moving again. This morning 10cm of snow is reported on the Yamabiko and Uenotaira slopes - perhaps not as much as we were hoping for and expecting looking at the forecast last night - and this morning it has just been cloudy but the resort is updating it's info with light snow falling on those open slopes as of 10am. Fingers crossed that will continue and we'll get new cm to report again. -8C up top and about -2C at the moment in the village, so a cold morning. The forecast is for snowfall today (on and off) and tomorrow. The weather is proving to be a bit difficult to read right at the moment though. Anyway for now good snow conditions on upper slopes of Nozawa and quite a lot of people around this morning to get out and enjoy it. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 67cm Posted on Saturday 21st December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. A bit more snowfall this morning with between 5-7cm reported on the upper parts of the resort and just a bit down below too. It is cloudy at the moment with light snow trying to fall still at higher elevations. Hoping for more snow today and tomorrow. 11am this morning is the Grand Opening "Opening Festival" for Nozawa Onsen resort, to be held near the top Nagasaka Gondola Station. There should be some sake on offer and no doubt some other goodies and probably your change to shake hands with the Nozawa Onsen mascot character. Perhaps worth a look if you are up there when it happens. There are more lifts and courses open from this morning and it's now easier to say which aren't moving than which are moving. See below for the latest there. Courses wise, the area to the right of the Nagasaka Gondola as you look from the village - including the Skyline course - is not yet open. Other than that, most of the main runs of the resort are open from today. Today is the first day of the three day long weekend in Japan and so it should be quite busy today and tomorrow especially. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa and I'm glad to be able to report some decent snowfall overnight with the resort reporting 15-20cm over the mountain this morning. Yamabiko is back up to 2m snow depth. It's good to see a nice new fresh layer down here at base too. Visibility not so good this morning as the snow continues to fall though it should ease off later today and we might get to see some clearer skies tomorrow morning. It's not so cold this morning and hovering at just over 0C as of 9am, and probably will just get colder this afternoon and overnight. Still busy here and it will be over the weekend as well. Things should be getting back to normal from Monday after the New Year holidays. All lifts go! I am about to get out on one myself. Should be great. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Last day of the new year holidays and today will likely get less busy with people returning home. There's still a lot of people around this morning though and those going up onto the slopes will be greeted by a new layer of snow. OK so how about that snow? Well, including the snowfall during the day yesterday the resort is reporting new snowfall since my last report of 18cm on Yamabiko, 15cm on Uenotaira, 16cm at Hikage and 6cm on the lower Karasawa. Light snow early this morning but the forecast for the day is for mostly just cloudy conditions. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The sun is out this morning over Nozawa and we have lovely (almost) clear blue skies. Nice and cold. Yesterday was more about the snow and it was snowing from early in the morning, quite heavily at times. The resort recorded between 5-15cm of snow between 8am and 4pm during the day (interestingly with the 15cm in the Hikage area, not top Yamabiko - which recorded 5cm). Wind may have played a part there though. Anyway there's no new snowfall this morning since yesterday. It should be a very fine day, with perhaps a return to snowfall tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 215cm Posted on Saturday 11th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . You know when things are going good when you hear people complain about 'too much snow'. Yes I heard that silly comment a few times yesterday. It was a great day though, seriously. Not only did we have all that new snow to play in all over the mountain, but the clouds cleared up in the afternoon and we had blue skies over the mountain for a while... days don't get much better than that. The heavy snowfall transformed many parts of the resort and was just what we wanted and needed. Curiously this morning the resort is only reporting 5cm across the mountain - apart from Uenotaira on 20cm. Add that to the 5cm or so since yesterday morning and we have another layer this morning. The latest forecast is for cloud/snow today. The poor visibility up top will likely clear, though perhaps not in the spectacular fashion it did yesterday, maybe more just cloud. Tomorrow sun is forecast so it should be a very good weekend. The only thing to mention is the crowds. It's the first day of a three day long weekend in Japan and one of the peak times of the snow season. So there are going to be a lot of people in Nozawa. A lot. Early starts are highly recommended to get out there early before the main crowds. We do of course have the famous Fire festival on the 15th January as well, but that's mid-week (Wednesday). The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Now this is more like it. Hold on, I'll use capitals. THIS IS MORE LIKE IT! Can you tell how happy I am to be able to report some very nice heavy snowfall this morning? Yes it was coming down yesterday and by 4pm the resort was reporting 15cm around the mountain, but we woke to lots more snow. Here's what they are reporting on various parts of the mountain since 3pm yesterday: Yamabiko - 30cm Uenotaira - 40cm Hikage - 35cm Nagasaka - 35cm Karasawa - 30cm So that means in places there has been over half a metre of snow. The snow depth numbers have zoomed right up this morning as well as you would expect, with Yamabiko now reporting 260cm and Hikage on 145cm. It's good and cold as well this morning. It is still snowing and should be (on and off?) for the day and beyond though some local forecasts have the snow easing off somewhat. Whatever, the snow clouds should remain closeby and I'll let you know every morning anyway. Conditions should be top notch this morning. Hurray! Enjoy but remember to take care out there in those deep conditions. Visibility is generally poor, so know where you're going. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday we got another 15cm or so of new snowfall on the mountain during the day. Snow eased off during the night though and they have done a runner as this morning it's clear blue skies over Nozawa. A beautiful morning. It's also a very cold morning as well, with the temperature about -7 degrees now. The resort have just reported a temperature of -12C on the top Yamabiko area. Heavy snow is still there on the forecast and due to be falling by the end of tomorrow and through Thursday. We might have to put up with some rain at base before the snow, but it should be worth it. Hopefully we might get a run of consistent snowfall right through into the weekend and really bulk up the amount of snow we have here. I very much look forward to it.
