Everywhere is looking fantastic this morning with a layer of snow on the ground. 5-10cm of it depending on where you measure, and who knows how much there will be up on the top area of the mountain... considerably more! As I write this, there's actually a bit of sun breaking through the (many) clouds, but more snow is on the forecast for the day and actually during the day tomorrow too. The forecast looks promising: Nozawa 6-day snow and weather forecast Very exciting. It feels like this season we could definitely be on for a decent start, and what's not to love about that. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao Onsen. Snow has been falling again. Down to village level here on Thursday with the first proper snow of the season. I had a total of 6cm of snow build up on the top of my car outside my place by yesterday. Nice. Will be more than that up on the mountain of course and the slopes are looking white. It is a little milder this morning with lots of cloud around. Looking ahead there is more snow forecast for over the coming weekend, with the best chance of snow on Sunday. Some more news for the upcoming season as we wait for the snow and ski resort opening. Floodlit night skiing for the 2017-2018 season is planned as follows: In the Uwanodai area: Daily from Saturday 23rd December 2017 until Sunday 4th March 2018 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only from Friday 9th March until Sunday 18th March 2018. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The snow continues! Light snow continued through yesterday and it is still snowing. A further 5cm has accumulated on the ground since the last report so the village is now a solid blanket of white. Snow is forecast continuously through until next Wednesday. Wednesday is down for a rain event at base level, but the upper mountain at least should see snow instead of the rain. All looking very good for an opening in a week. The resort has a tentative opening date of 25 November 2017 subject to conditions. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After my report yesterday of snowfall, this morning I have some more to report. 8cm of it. And it's good quality stuff too, nice and light. Brilliant! And that's not all. The forecast is good. More snowfall is due over the weekend and beyond. Everything is looking good for a quality start this coming Thursday as planned. That's what we like to hear. Right now it isn't snowing and it's a mix of cloud and blue sky. The sun is out and the start to the season is looking bright too, with Kumanoyu announcing that it will indeed be part open from tomorrow. That area plans to have the Number 2 pair lift operating with a 30-50m wide, 600m long ski course open. The snow isn't deep yet but enough for that start. And it looks like there should be snowfall over the weekend too. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Snow news is good news and I have just been out and measured 10cm of fresh snow which fantastic. It is currently snowing lightly and the flakes are pretty large and light for this time of year. The snow is predicted to continue at least until midday, and then over the weekend there will be continuous snow that should leave a decent amount on the upper slopes at least. All this bodes well for the resort's opening date in little over a weeks time. The resort has a tentative opening date of 25 November 2017 subject to conditions. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning everyone. It's cold. It feels like winter. And, most importantly, it's snowing! There's a thin covering of snow on the ground and possibly more to come during today and tonight. And over the weekend too. Looking good. I'm feeling confident of a fine upcoming season. And at last - just in time - the official Shiga Kogen has been given an update - and below are the planned opening dates of the different resort areas around Shiga Kogen. Many of them will really just depend on snowfall and will open when they can within the ranges noted below. You'll notice that Kumanoyu are hoping to get going on Saturday... the day after tomorrow! As well as the natural snow they have some machines busy blasting out some 'artificial snow' at the moment. They are going to be making a decision on that tomorrow, so I will post again later in the day tomorrow with that news. One bit of news this season is that the tiny Kidoike area won't be part of this winter season. It's been taken off the official maps. It doesn't really make much of a difference as I doubt many people visiting Shiga Kogen will have used it, but still it means that rather than '19 ski resorts', Shiga Kogen now consists of '18 ski resorts'. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from my base here in Hirafu. I actually have some snow to add to my report today, but I'll lead up to that with a bit of a look back at what has happened over the last few months... The first little bits of sprinkly-like snow (?) was seen on the top of Mt Yotei at the end of September. That seems early to me, though I must confess to not being the kind to go overboard with pre-season snow dustings. I have a very long season ahead of me, so I like to keep my excitement for just before the season and then all the way through it! We have gone through some snaps of wild weather this autumn season. After that typhoon that came through around October 22nd, I had some sleetly-like slush outside my door. It was more snow like a little higher up. After that the first non-slushy proper snowflakes arrived down here 5th November. Less than 1cm. As always, the contrast of late autumn colours and the frosting of snow has been just lovely. Then this last Saturday we had some more wild, windy and rainy weather conditions. Overnight that rain turned into snow. And yesterday morning there was a nice layer of snow on the ground. I measured just under 8cm of snowfall here at base. With the previous slush and dusting, I'm going to add 9cm to the report this morning. I wonder how much there will have been higher up? As you can see from the webcam images this morning, there's not much to see lower down now other than some drops of rain with a green background, but there's a layer of snow higher up. Yesterday was a really beautiful day. Lovely. It's normal to get excited about the news of snow (of course), but I wouldn't get overly excited into think that ski lifts will suddenly start moving. Best way to think - if the resorts can open on their planned opening dates, that will be a very good thing. Fingers crossed. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a bit of an extreme weather event with strong winds for the whole afternoon. The wind was accompanied by driving rain, which morphed into sleet later in the afternoon. This morning Furano is in a totally calm state with nice sunshine beaming through the breaks in the cloud. The town has received a substantial 7cm of snow overnight which has settled on the ground. This is the first significant snowfall of the season. There is still plenty of warmth in the ground so the white roads will retreat back to tar seal fairly quickly. The resort has a tentative opening date of 25 November 2017 subject to conditions. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa Onsen, and welcome back to our Nozawa Now reports. It’s a chilly Friday morning, 10th November 2017. It certainly does not feel like it was six months ago when I posted my last report from the 2016-2017 season. Since that report we’ve had a rather uneven summer with probably more than our share of rain and less sun and clear skies than we usually get. I think that’s the story for the wider region and perhaps even most of Japan too. Anyway, we are now just over two weeks away from the planned opening date of Nozawa Onsen… that planned opening being on Saturday 25th November. Obviously, that is going to depend on the weather and snowfall. If you look back at the archive reporting (links below) from previous season, you’ll be able to see how often Nozawa gets to open on that planned late November opening date. I highly recommend a read through reports from previous seasons. We have had some snowfall on the mountain already, and as you can see from the images below there’s a bit of snow remaining up on the top slopes at the moment. The sun is out this morning and it looks like it should be a fine day, though it won’t get much warmer than 12 degrees during the daytime. I believe the biggest resort news for the upcoming season is the new course area that has been developed to connect the E Course on the top Yamabiko area with the top of the Skyline course. This change will mean that you won’t need to get the Skyline connecting pair when you want to ride the Skyline course. Sounds good to me and I am really looking forward to checking it out. Can’t wait for the season to start now and highly anticipating a bumper snow season here in Nozawa. I’ll be here with you every day once the lifts get moving and will post some updates over the next few weeks as that planned opening approaches. Summer didn’t bring us typical summer weather conditions this year, being rather wetter than usual. Let’s hope that we can get through all the ‘wet’, and that the upcoming winter will be very much ‘dry’... and powdery of course! I’m glad to be back, all revved up and ready to report to you from Hakuba every day once again and I hope that I’ll be able to bring you lots of positive snow news. An early good start to the season would be a perfect start. There were various rumours going around about Sanosaka over summer… it will be opening but it looks like operations will be somewhat scaled down with just three lifts (Number 2 quad lift, Number 3 quad lift, Number 6 pair lift) scheduled to be operating. The ‘Hakuba Valley’ lift ticket prices for the 2017-2018 season have been updated on each of the 9 ski resort pages on SnowJapan. In snow news, we have had some mountain snowfall already at times 20cm and more at higher elevations. The snow-capped mountain tops are looking lovely today. Check out the Happo webcam images below from earlier this morning. Everyone is in pre-season ‘panic’ mode. Don’t worry, nothing to be concerned about - this is the norm! No matter how much time we sometimes seem to have, there always seems to be mad rushing about going on in the run up to the season starting. All part of the pattern, part of the fun. Some of the official information sources are still not updated for the 2017-2018 season which, if I wasn’t used to being here, would seem odd. The ski resort pages on SnowJapan have generally been updated but will be updated further over the coming few weeks. That’s it for me for today. It's getting winter-like cold once again up here in Shiga Kogen and, not for the first time this season, it has been snowing this morning! Not too long now before the ski season gets underway here with the first lifts probably going to be moving later in the month. Kumanoyu are hoping to open on 18th or 19th November, all depending on the weather and snow conditions of course. I wanted to bring you lots of official new this morning, but -- incredibly -- the official Shiga Kogen website is still in 2016-2017 mode and has not been updated for the 2017-2018 season. You'd think they would be itching to get the fresh information out to everyone come early autumn... but anyway, I hope to be able to bring you more official details next week.
