The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday was very windy. It was really blowing about, and it's now easy to see why Kagura didn't open yesterday! The strong southerly wind and mild conditions won't have been kind to the snow that is up there. It's a murky and damp kind of start to the day, and a very mild 9-10C in town. At least the wind has calmed down. The weather might not be perfect, but Kagura ski area is scheduled to be open today. It is the first ski area in Niigata Prefecture to open for the season. Over the coming days, hopefully it will get colder and we will get some snow on the mountains, though it seems unlikely that we'll get any snow down to town (where it will be more like rain). Anyway, it is officially the first day of the ski season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is not the most pleasant of mornings. It's rather wet this morning in town with some nasty rain coming down. Not sure if it is snowing up top but Kagura has a snow>rain icon on the official site. The webcams show that there has been a covering of snow up at Yuzawa Kogen, so Kagura has surely got some too. The ski area is also warning of strong winds and that the pair lift will be operating rather than the quad. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Happy to report the first snowfall recorded at town level this morning. Kagura is reporting 40cm of snowfall since yesterday. I can't see any news of more lifts/courses opening (at 8:45am), but as more snow falls that is surely going to happen very soon. More snow is forecast through tomorrow and then, after a few days of possibly clearer skies, more snow is forecast from Wednesday onwards. This is all very encouraging. (Joetsu Kokusai cannot yet open, of course, but you never know... if we get some good snow cover over the next few days they might not be far off) ------------------------- Ski area operation information will be updated in the report tomorrow morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday the snow eased off after early morning (was hoping for more!) but we have had some more overnight. There is up to 10cm (and counting) in places at town level, with surely more than that as you go higher up. We are expecting snow throughout the day today - at times heavy snow? - and clearer skies from tomorrow for a few days. More of Kagura ski area is now open and there is no need for all that walking between lifts any more. You can now ski/board back to Mitsumata using the Family course. Joetsu Kokusai has delayed opening until Wednesday 11th December... at the earliest. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing quite heavily at times yesterday, particularly mid to late morning. Less since then but a bit more overnight and over 25cm to report. Nice. A definitely different feel to December so far this year... which is a good thing! And there's regular snow there on the weekly forecasts, too, though we may get to see the sun at times before the next snow around Wednesday. GALA Yuzawa is next up for opening this coming Friday, with Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen planning for a Saturday opening. There is probably some more new cm at higher elevations. With more snow due before the weekend and also beyond the weekend, the chances of ski areas being able to open as planned seems very good. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There's fresh snow to report this morning, along with very good news that GALA Yuzawa and Joetsu Kokusai will both open from tomorrow. First up, snow fall. It started proper last night and this morning there is 15-20cm of it on the ground, and we expect more today. No news from any ski areas on how much there might have been higher up. GALA Yuzawa will open up five courses in the Central Area (Melody, Edelweiss, Entertainment, Gigi, Grenoble... basically, all of that main section) and Joetsu Kokusai will be opening the Panorama Zone with five lifts operating to get up there. GALA Yuzawa have also turned on their webcams, so today the three images are from that ski area! Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen plan to open on Saturday and I'd say there was a close to 100% chance that will happen. Yes, we did get some rain again, but this month is feeling so much different from last December. That's a good thing. And there looks to be regular snow on the forecast for the coming week. Remember, it's still only 12th December. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just a little more snow since yesterday and we are staring this Friday morning with cloudy skies early on - it feels like it might get clearer and brighter. (Just a feeling!) It will very likely be bit milder today, but hopefully not by too much. We are expecting more cold and snowfall through the day tomorrow, and then perhaps some clearer skies on Sunday. Today is the first day of the season for GALA Yuzawa and also Joetsu Kokusai. It is the first time in five years that GALA is able to open on the originally planned opening date. We shall take that as a good sign! And they are doing it in pretty good style too, with all of the Central Area open from the start of the day. At Joetsu Kokusai, five lifts will be open with the main skiable area being the Panorama courses. (See details for each ski area below the following message). Tomorrow, Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen also plan to open. At Naeba, you'll be able to ski down from the Takanokodaira upper area. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we had some quite bright skies in the morning, making for a good start for GALA Yuzawa and Joetsu Kokusai. From this morning, Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen are also part open. So that means that there are now five ski areas open in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region. Most of the other ski areas in the region plan to open on Friday/Saturday next weekend, and with the current weather and forecasts for the week ahead, it feels like they will all be able to. Fantastic. Back to the weather, around 10cm overnight and it had eased off but it is snowing once again. Hopefully we will get some more cm during the day today with more on/off through the coming week (and potentially moderate to heavy at times). Good old fashioned consistent 'yukiguni' snowfall patterns. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. What a lovely morning it is! For the moment, we have a beautiful mix of blue sky, sunshine and some cloud. And with another modest amount of snow since yesterday morning (most during the day with just a little more overnight), everywhere is looking bright and white. (Your reporter is sitting here posting this report whilst dreaming of the first tracks that are on offer this morning.) The clearer skies might not last much longer and there is already more cloud to the north of Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's snowing again. 9cm at our Yuzawa measuring point at 8am with a bit less than that out to the north in Ishiuchi. We do expect more snow through the day, though, so there should be more to report tomorrow. I really wish we could let you know how much fresh snow Kagura ski area is reporting each morning, but they are being rather quiet on that front so far this season. (At the moment they seem more interested in telling us about the free soup that will be offered when the Tashiro Ropeway opens on Saturday! Hmmmm.) Anyway, various forecasts also still show regular snowfall on and off this week. Again, it might not be huge amounts incoming just yet, but it's a steady pattern and the mountains probably have a good enough covering for ski areas to open. More than 10 ski areas in the region plan to open on Friday and Saturday (see list below) and will very probably all be able to. (Though that is not confirmed news at this point). Won't it be really great if all of them can open exactly as planned?! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Kagura is reporting no new snowfall overnight, but it has started snowing this morning and has started to stick. Currently just under 0C in town. As of 8:20am, I can report 1cm from our measuring point in town and hopefully it will continue so we'll get some new cm today and tomorrow. I don't think we are expecting significant snowfall - that looks more likely from early Sunday morning. (And before then we might get clearer skies on Friday and during the day on Saturday). The very welcome early rush of snowfall we enjoyed covered the mountains and really helped with early and on-time ski area openings. I think we are all now looking to the skies and hoping to see some good old snow country style heavy snow to get things going and help build up the numbers. Update: 5 ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region plan to open from Friday (20th December) and 7 further ski areas plan to open from Saturday (21st December). As of this morning, all but Muica Snow Resort and Yuzawa Park have confirmed that they will be opening as planned. It's likely those two will also be able to open as planned... they just haven't announced it yet. Note that they will probably not all be able to be 'fully open' we'll have more details on operations at each of them come Friday morning.
