Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 40cm
Snowfall at base this season 248cm

Posted on Saturday 11th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

What a day yesterday was!

As you can see from the report, the day started off with a good new thick layer of snow and it was snowing and forecast to be snowing. Late morning though and the sun was peaking through and then all of a sudden... blue skies! The clouds cleared and we were left with magnificent blue skies with just a few small clouds hanging around. Probably to enjoy the view. Beautiful it was. And the snow refresh helped a lot as well. The slopes generally were quiet and I think everyone who was able to make it out would have had a really great day.

While we got those blue skies, by the time evening came it was snowing again!

And snow it did, with about 40cm of fresh snow this morning. I say about 40cm, in places it is more than that in some less but that's how much the snow has increased according to my trusty ruler and what's on the cars outside. Needless to say, another good new layer of snow. Interestingly, Naeba is only reporting 5-10cm and Kagura only 20cm and so we seem to have got more down here in the valley than up there - or should I say down there, as they are to the south of the main town area.

It continues to snow this morning.

The last two days have really changed things here - while we had 'enough' snow before, it just wasn't ENOUGH. If that makes sense. The last few days has given us some renewed deep conditions.

In the meantime today is the first of three holidays and so the popular resort areas will be just that today... popular. It will probably be busy for the next few days.

The other news for today which I mentioned last week and just reminding you, is that from today the top pair lift at Kagura opens for the season.

A few conflicting forecasts for the coming few days. Some are saying that we can expect sun tomorrow, others more snow. We'll just have to wait and see.
