  • Hakuba Now: Wednesday 17th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 252cm Posted on Wednesday 17th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We have beautiful blue clear skies over Hakuba this morning. The mountains are, of course, looking amazing! It has been a very cold morning but has gradually been unfreezing gradually. As of 11am it is just above -2C in the village. And after all the winds that we had yesterday, this morning things are much calmer. Just a great day to be here. Kansha! Tomorrow might bring precipitation; unfortunately, it might well be rain down in the village (booooo!) as temps rise to around +5C, but it should be snowing higher up. --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 0cm Official snow depth: Upper: 245cm Toomi: 110cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 0cm Base: 0cm Official snow depth: Top: 230cm Base: 100cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: Upper: about 10cm (12 hours) Official snow depth: Top: 222cm Base: 162cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 20cm Usagidaira: 0cm Top of Riesen quad: 15cm (social media) Nakiyama: 0cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 230cm Usagidaira: 146cm Nakiyama: 80cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 0cm Village Side: 0cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 170cm Village Side: 100cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 220cm Jigatake Reported snowfall: 00cm Official snow depth: 100cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: 90cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Official snow depth: Upper: 212cm Lower: 50cm (that has gone down a lot, strange) White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 95cm --------------- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far (in upper areas) [The information below originates from the ski areas themselves, it is being checked and updated manually every report from public Hakuba Valley sources] ABLE Hakuba Goryu: 619cm Hakuba 47: 402cm Hakuba Happo-one: 525cm Hakuba Cortina: 416cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 416cm Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Wednesday 17th January 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 252cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 29 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 35cm (8th January) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 131cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. • Hakuba Now: Monday 15th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 236cm Posted on Monday 15th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A lovely sunny day yesterday, and with the fresh snow on the mountain it was such a treat for everyone here. Including myself. Thank you, Nature. You're fab. And this morning we have received more fresh snow to keep things going. As you can see in the numbers below, we're looking at another 25-35cm more. And, I suspect, even more in places. I have measured another just under 20cm for this report. We don't have the sun this morning. It's still snowing and visibility looks pretty varied out there but ranging from OK to poor. Wind doesn't seem to be strong enough to be affecting any ski lifts at the start of the day. More snow is forecast through today and into tomorrow and heavy at times. This particularly snow will be followed by clearer skies again on Wednesday (which should definitely be worth taking a day off work for!) Happy Mondays! --------------- A very sobering bit of news. Someone lost their life due to avalanche yesterday. From what I understand, it was a man in his 30s and the location was backcountry off Happo-one (southern slope). Friends were on the scene quite quickly but unfortunately the attempts to save his live were not successful. It is very sad to hear such news and thoughts with family and close ones. Let's always keep it in mind to be prepared and be careful, and even more so if you are venturing out from the ski areas. --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 30cm Official snow depth: Upper: 220cm Toomi: 100cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 35cm Base: 25cm Official snow depth: Top: 220cm Base: 80cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: Upper: about 25cm Official snow depth: Top: 200cm Base: 160cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 35cm Usagidaira: 20cm Top of Riesen quad: 10cm (social media) Nakiyama: 5cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 240cm Usagidaira: 173cm Nakiyama: 75cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 25cm Village Side: 20cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 180cm Village Side: 130cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 190cm Jigatake Reported snowfall: 20cm Official snow depth: 90cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: 90cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Official snow depth: Upper: 222cm Lower: 95cm White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 90cm --------------- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far (in upper areas) [The information below originates from the ski areas themselves, it is being checked and updated every report from Hakuba Valley sources] ABLE Hakuba Goryu: 579cm Hakuba 47: 372cm Hakuba Happo-one: 515cm Hakuba Cortina: 376cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 316cm Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Monday 15th January 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 236cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 27 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 35cm (8th January) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 115cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. • Hakuba Now: Sunday 14th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 217cm Posted on Sunday 14th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It is a beautiful cold morning with clear blue skies. What makes it even better is a lot of fresh snow. There was some snow overnight but mostly it was during the day yesterday. The result is various ski areas reporting up to 30-35cm of fresh snow in upper elevations since yesterday morning. For example. Hakuba 47 were reporting 20cm of snowfall during the day and this morning an extra 5cm in upper areas. Cortina are reporting 25cm since 3pm yesterday. Numbers aside, this morning should be excellent conditions along with a beautiful day to enjoy it. That's what matters! Just a quick word about snowfall numbers. The ski areas are all separate entities. They report in their own way, and by their own rules. Different elevations, different times, some just 'overnight' (curiously ignoring snow from the previous day), some 'since yesterday' (a bit like my numbers). Sometimes they look very different, even on the same day. A bit like today, perhaps. I just check the numbers that ski areas put out there and post them in this report for your information. I really can't do more than that (ie. explaining them every day). If I had to do that, I think my head might explode. (Or is that, implode?) My advice is to look at them and just get a general idea of what is going on through my own observed numbers and general commentary. Don't overthink it. Have fun. Relax. The observed snowfall numbers in this report come to you from the same person (ie. me) and from a consistent source (location/timing) every day throughout the season. I take the responsibly very seriously and you can trust them to be 'correct'. Though, obviously, snowfall varies depending on where you are - even within the close by areas. And 'Hakuba' is a wide area. So what you see, Hakuba visitor, may differ. Usually only slightly, hopefully, but we can both be 'correct'. (Click on the About tab close to the top of the report for more). More snow due overnight, tomorrow and Tuesday. --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 35cm Official snow depth: Upper: 205cm Toomi: 100cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 5cm Base: 5cm Official snow depth: Top: 190cm Base: 60cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall (since 3pm yesterday): Upper: 25cm Base: 25cm Official snow depth: Top: 200cm Base: 165cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 5cm Usagidaira: 6cm Top of Riesen quad: 30cm (social media) Nakiyama: 5cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 205cm Usagidaira: 153cm Nakiyama: 70cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 20cm Village Side: 10cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 140cm Village Side: 90cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 165cm Jigatake Reported snowfall: 20cm Official snow depth: 70cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: 60cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Official snow depth: Upper: 201cm Lower: 81cm White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 70cm --------------- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far (in upper areas) [The information below originates from the ski areas themselves, it is being checked and updated every report from Hakuba Valley sources] ABLE Hakuba Goryu: 549cm Hakuba 47: 337cm Hakuba Happo-one: 480cm Hakuba Cortina: 351cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 295cm Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Sunday 14th January 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 217cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 26 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 35cm (8th January) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 96cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Mornings like this feel a bit overwhelming at times, as I try to get as much info together as possible from all the ski areas. Even at 9:30am there are some gaps in the info available, but this is probably just a good sign that it has snowed... So, yes, it has snowed. And a fair amount too. Here are the headline numbers of new snowfall, as reported by ski areas this morning: Happo: 88cm (!?) at Usagidaira; 15cm at top of Riesen quad (an odd set of numbers, that) Tsugaike: 70cm Hakuba Cortina: 50cm (base), 60cm (top) Hakuba 47: 30cm (base), over 50cm (top) Hakuba Iwatake: 30cm (base), 40cm (top) I have measured 35cm. You get the idea: basically, a lot of fresh snow out there this morning. Brilliant. It looks like the Tree Riding Zone part of Hakuba 47 will be (part) available from today. Most base areas of Happo-one are available again, as is the connection between top and base at Goryu. I suspect (and very much hope) that we might soon be at that stage of the season where all of the ski areas are 'fully open'. Oh yes, the top lifts at Happo-one on hold due to strong winds. • Hakuba Now: Sunday 7th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 129cm Posted on Sunday 7th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning and greetings from Hakuba. It was a warmish day yesterday, again getting up to +9C in the village. Too warm. Stop it! But, this morning there is fresh snowfall on the mountain. Here's what the ski areas are reporting this morning: Happo: 5-10cm on upper areas Hakuba 47: 10cm on upper areas Hakuba Cortina: 5cm (base), 10cm (upper) Hakuba Iwatake: 1-3cm So, that's nice. Head up to find the funnest fun this morning. I did have a dusting on my car very early this morning, so I feel I can add 1cm to the reports this morning. Perhaps my generosity there will encourage Nature to bring us more. (Yeah, I know...) This morning higher areas are covered in cloud (fog?), though lower down it is quite bright and even a bit of blue sky and sunshine. We are still told to expect snow later and overnight. I have a friend down in western Japan and he says his local ski area is completely bare of snow. Like, none at all. Not even a bit. It sounds like a lot of Japan is experiencing low levels of snow so far this season, particularly on the main Honshu island. So, we should be thankful that we have so much open right now... even if it doesn't quite feel 'full on' yet. -------------------------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Operations (scheduled): Most lifts and runs are now open, some Iimori runs closed. Looks like the gondola is needed to get down from the top area once again. Official snow depth: Upper: 130cm Toomi: 50cm ------------ Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park Operations (scheduled): All scheduled lifts and runs are open (The Line D lift usually only opens when the Gondola is not operating) Tree Riding Zones will open at a later date New snowfall (reported by ski area): Top: 10cm Base: 0cm Official snow depth: Upper: 130cm Base: 35cm ------------ Hakuba Happo-one Operations (scheduled): Most lifts operating and a large part of the ski area is now open, but with restrictions You need to get lifts back to base areas due to low snow cover The top Grat quad lift is now operating but only for sightseeing and backcountry (the Riesen Grat run is not yet available) New snowfall (reported by ski area): Kurobishi: 10cm Usagidaira: 7cm Top of Riesen quad: 5cm Official snow depth: Kurobushi (1680m): 130cm Usagidaira (1400m): 87cm Nakiyama (800m): 15cm ------------ Hakuba Cortina Official snow depth: Upper: 105cm Base: 50cm New snowfall (reported by ski area): Upper: 10cm Base: 5cm ------------ Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Operations (scheduled): 5 lifts and 5 courses Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 80cm Village Side: 40cm New snowfall (reported by ski area): Upper: 3cm Base: 1cm ------------ Hakuba Norikura Onsen Operations (scheduled): 7 lifts and 8 courses Official snow depth: 65cm ------------ Tsugaike Mountain Resort Operations: 11 lifts operating and mostly open Official snow depth: Upper: 130cm Base: 15cm Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Sunday 7th January 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 129cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 20 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 26cm (23rd December) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 8cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 128cm Posted on Thursday 4th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. We have a fairly modest amount of fresh snow this morning. Earlier on I had 3-4cm on the top of my car though the snow on the roads around base has largely gone by now. It's a bit wet. There are hints of light blue behind the clouds in some places... perhaps it will clear up. Hakuba Cortina reporting up to 15cm of snowfall in upper areas. Other ski areas are generally reporting 5-10cm of fresh. Sounds like that is about how much we can expect on the runs this morning. Sunshine is due tomorrow but hopefully the weekend will be snowy, particularly Sunday. -------------------------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Operations (scheduled): Most lifts and runs are now open, some Iimori runs closed. • Hakuba Now: Monday 1st January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 125cm Posted on Monday 1st January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and a very happy new year to everyone. May it be a good one for us all. The 'technical issues', ahem, this morning were solved with a few glasses of water, coffee and an aspirin. (Phew!) Anyway, last year ended with some yucky rain that was, of course, not friendly to our lovely snow. Happily, we got some fresh snow overnight. And while it is not a huge amount around base areas, Hakuba 47 is reporting up to 20cm in upper areas. But Hakuba Cortina wins the 'most snow' prize this morning - they are reporting an impressive 40cm of fresh! That sounds great. :) Visibility seems generally limited on the mountains this morning, but better lower down with blue sky in places. So it's a bit of complicated early morning weather snapshot. Ski area operations also remains quite complicated. It's impossible to comment on everything, but I note the top lifts at Happo-one are on hold at the start of the day and the runs down to the Nakiyama and Kokusai base areas have become unavailable. It's nothing that a large amount of mountain-wide snow storm can't fix. But when will we get that? I wish I knew.
