Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 2cm
Snowfall at base this season 368cm

Posted on Friday 23rd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here.

There's some fresh snow to report this morning, mostly ranging from a dusting through 3cm... but Jigatake is reporting 10cm.

It is still snowing lightly, though it is not the kind of snow that brings us big numbers.

Limited visibility on the mountains this morning, the first day of the long weekend. With today being a national holiday in Japan, it's will probably be a busy one.

We might get to enjoy some sun tomorrow morning. Hopefully it will remain cold over the coming days and then we get more snow early in the week.

---------------

Unfortunately the top Line E lift at Hakuba 47 is out of action today and that effectively cuts off the connection between 47 and Goryu. (Not sure why, but it's due to be closed for the day).

---------------

I hear that, through end of January 2024, there were about 290,000 overseas visitors to the 10 ski areas that make up 'Hakuba Valley'. That is 2.2 times the number of visitors from last season and a record number for the season is expected. There certainly are a lot of people from around the world here this year. It will surely only increase.

I'm always curious as to how they come up with these numbers... I know I don't identify myself when I go skiing, and am not easily identifiable as a foreigner in ski gear (especially on a cold day). And I live here.
