klingon 10
Anyone see The Insider, I'll be giving that a go tonight.....
barok 0
Insider was great, a little slow, but most true stories are. Speaking of true stories, I really dug Catch Me If You Can. Going to see a movie tomorrow - my first cinematic experience here in Japan - what is playing now ? ? ?
snowboard_freak 0
Insider is good. Like barok said, a bit slow at times but a good flick all the same,
Fattwins 0
That was a great movie. A star in my books.
enderzero 0
I have seen Cuckoo'sNest and am reading the book right now. Anyone seen Chinatown? Such a classic. I really love Kurosawa flicks as well. Hidden Fortress anyone?
brit-gob 9
I'm watching thro the Godfather DVD collection right now - very awesome
nekobi 0
my favorite older movie is some like it hot with marilyn monroe, tony curtis, and jack lemmon. it's so funny and outrageous.
nzlegend 1
God father is #1 rated movie on IMDB on the net. Cant go past Ben Hur for a classic, would love to see the chariot scene on the big screen.
NoFakie 45
My favourite Kurosawa film is Ikiru, the one set in the 50s about a civil servant who's only got months to live. It might be a bit slow for some people, but it's a really beautiful film. One of my all-time top three for sure.
enderzero 0
I missed Ikiru but I did see his civil servant flick "The Bad Sleep Well." I prefer the samurai movies though.
grungy-gonads 54
Life of Brian Saw 'Misery' over the weekend - maybe not classic, but good film all the same.
snowboard_freak 0
I really enjoyed Misery. One of the better Stephen King based movies.
scouser 4
How do you enjoy the Japanese films - with subtitles? I don't suppose there are voice over versions -that would be seriously lame.
snowboard_freak 0
The Ring is the only Japanese flick i've seen. It had sub-titles but it is the kind of movie that doesn't rely heavily on dialogue. Great movie, a bit better than the American remake i thought.
enderzero 0
scouser - yes, definitely with subtitles! I cannot stand to watch an kind of voice over. Especially with Japanese movies as I am trying to learn the language. I forced db to watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with subtitles the other day kicking and screaming. He admitted he didn't even notice he was reading by half way through. I have been a huge fan of foreign films for so long it always shocks me when someone is hesitant to watch a movie with subtitles. Markie 0
I love J-movies by Kitano, especially when he acts in them. I just watched one last night...in Japanese with both English and Chinese sub-titles.
enderzero 0
Ahh, the dual subtitles. Sure mark of a pirated Hong Kong street disc.
Stefan 0
The Tsutaya (sp?) here has loads of classics, the sort of stuff they just don't have back in Blockbuster in the UK. Over the last couple of weeks I've seen The Killing Fields, The Deer Hunter and Cukoo's Nest. All great films. As for subtitles I saw Battle Royale back home in the UK, the reading was a pain, perhaps cos the film was a bit cr*p.
scouser 4
Markie - any room on the screen for the pics there?
Markie 0
Actually, enderzero, the Kitano film I watched was on Cable TV and there are a lot of non-pirated videos with dual sub-titles. The one good thing about the extensive pirated video and CD markets here is that it has forced the prices of the real stuff down to more realistic levels so you can pick up tons of the "good" stuff here at cheap prices! The pirated market, on the other hand, though offering dirt cheap prices, can never guarantee quality or even if it is playable at all.
Markie 0
Scouser, you lost me here. Pics of what?
