I have the chance to work in either of the above next year, and wondering what to do. I have friends in both, but I was just wondering what the Aussies on here would say about a battle of the cities?!

Depends what you want. Sydney is a beautiful city, the biggest, most internationally recognised, has amazing beaches, great pubs, gay capital, and is central for travelling the east coast. It is also the most expensive, a bastard to get around, difficult to find a place to live in within reasonable commuting time and it rains statistically more than Melbourne.

Melbourne is the sporting capital, the art/culture city, great public transport, closer to the snow, cheaper to live, better clubs/not pubs though, and much more relaxed. The beaches, beautiful as they are are an hour away, it doesn't have the scenery of Sydney (an hour away theres the Great Ocean Road, 12 Apostles, Bells Beach, Phillip Island)and in winter it is cold and miserable.

I'm from Melbourne and loved it but didn't have to put up with winter as I was at the snow 4 days a week.

I'm sure someone from Sydney will agree/disagree with what I've said and more.

that's a pretty reasonable summary.

i'm kinda trying to make a decision between them myself.

i spent a couple of months in melbourne and loved it. didn't like sydney so much when i last went there, but figure i may have grown into it.

its a tough choice.

what's canberra like?

Being an Adelaide boy and having lived in melbourne for a few years I would have to say Melbourne.

Its much easier to get around than sydney, has almost every big sporting/musical/art event in the country ( because they stole them from every other state) Great cafe's,rests, bars and clubs + the biggest casino in the sthrn hemisphere.

The only X on melbourne's list for me is the fact that we have to travel about 1 hr for waves.

My paradise is Phillip Island which i will be returning to one of these days, although the wife has requested a warmer climate for the winter months!

Victorian people are a little crazy come the first month of september..

As an ex-Adelaidean too, I'd have to agree with the above. Both are big and bustling. Sydney's the picture postcard city with a lifestyle supposedly epitomizing the "Ozzie Image". And a great place it is.

But Melbournes just got more depth. Sydneyites always seem to criticize Melb. as a gloomy, cold, wet place (esp. winter) but such criticism would also include most of the major Buzz Capitals of the world. London, NY, Amsterdam, ...........!

Either place would be a great experience. You couldn't really go wrong. ;\)

Well I've got to say Sydney. That said I have lived here nearly my whole life and have only visited Melbourne a couple times and really didn't enjoy it. I doubt I will go back unless I have to.

Don't even bother with Canberra unless your life revolves solely around pot, porno and pyrotechnics.
