TOKYO, Sept 1 (Reuters) - A volcano in central Japan erupted on Wednesday night, spitting cinders and glowing red at its tip, but the scale of the eruption was minor and no evacuation was necessary, officials said.

Mount Asama, a 2,568-metre (8,425-foot) peak not far from Nagano, the site of the 1998 Winter Olympics, erupted shortly after 8:00 p.m. (1100 GMT), an official at the Meteorological Agency said.

"It appears to be a minor eruption, and we are not considering issuing any evacuation orders," the official said.

He said that due to bad weather, it was difficult to determine whether the mountain had sent up a column of ash, but it appeared that cinders had been thrown about halfway down the side of the peak.

Television footage showed a small red glow in the darkness, and residents were quoted as saying they heard the sound of an explosion.

Asama has had several minor eruptions in recent years, including at least four in 2003.

Japan, which lies at the intersection of at least three tectonic plates -- massive slabs of the earth's crust -- is one of the world's most seismically active nations, with an earthquake occurring every five minutes somewhere in the country.

Wednesday's eruption took place on the anniversary of a 1923 earthquake that devastated Tokyo, and a quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shook northern Japan just before noon.
