just got a copy of 'document snowboard' - there's an 8 page feature about some riders who came over to hakuba last year from the uk (sam nelson) and hooked up with joeri van der vliet the belgian sponsored dude who was here last season.

there's some cool shots of them hitting avi barriers and the trees at 47. a couple of the local boys get a special mention too.

and right at the end SJ gets a mention too.

funny though, the thing most people remember about the nagano games are: ross's little incident, and hermann meir's crash.

why did hermanm crash like he did? because the hill got something like two meters worth of snow in less than a week.

back on topic - in UK snowboard magazines (before you laugh, that's propbably alot MORE exposure than in snowboard mags in snowy countries where people just ride instead of reading magazines instead - there are 3 major mags in the UK alone!) Japan articles have been there for the last 5 years, with one article like this one each year, usually in Whitelines, and usually visiting Niseko/Hokkaido but not always.

Before I came to Japan last time in 1999, i based my location preference choices on an article in Onboard european snowboard mag about Niseko and Hachimantai in Iwate, and I ended up in Iwate and riding at Hachimatai! These articles do influence poeple, or at least make them aware of where to live if they coming to teach English!

The Maier crash was caused by a bend that was not in the original course plan. It took out many other racers too. I think the course was changed after multiple postponements, including one for rain.

There are a lot of factors why Japan is starting to get popular for ski holidays. Exposure in things like ski videos help, but the after-effects of 9/11 and economic reasons like overseas real estate bubbles and the BOJ devaluating the yen at every opportunity are more important. 225 yen to the UK pound is almost a joke. Japan used to be an expensive country to visit, but it isn't any more. Like the poster connected to the US military, you can get "insane" deals, even at New Year.

There's also a lot more info available now - SJ plays a lsrge part in that. And I'm pretty sure I remember reading they also do a lot of stuff with overseas ski press and the like..
