I thought it just depended on how busy the resort was. Don't they slow the lifts down to control the number of people on the slopes when it's busy?

If there are more than a few people waiting, the best way to go is the single person line - always moves faster cos so many people seem to think that sitting next to their friends on the lift is much more important than getting to the top of the mountain.

2 years ago my wife was on a "Romance" pair lift (we don't always stick together) and a young 20ish guy started taliking to her.

You know the usual - nice day - howz it going - etc and then he said,

"Wow you're really cute" in Japanese of course.

At the time she was wearing a beanie, goggles & scarf and a very puffy jacket. I only could recognize her because of the beanie, so what was he after?

Of course they parted at the top when he suggested she should go with him on this trail.

Ahhh - to be young and sniffing again without a care. ;\)

The few single lifts I have tried have been the worst ever. Can't even remember where they were now but they weren't fun that's for sure. Seemed to go on forever.
