634-maru 4
When you meet someone for the first time in a number of years... are there any no-go comments? There don't seem to be! Not in these parts anyway. - my you have put on weight (cheers!) - haven't you gone grey (cheers!) - you look older ne (cheers!) etc Not just talking about myself but hearing other people talk. It's surprising seeing how some people age though isn't it. Met a few guys I used to work with about 7 years ago last night. One guy I know looks great for nearly 50. His colleague, same age, has gone the other way... not looking nearly as good.
pie-eater 207
Some people are pretty blunt about stuff like that aren't they? Whatever happened to tatemae in these delicate situations.
Chriselle 158
It doesn't matter the condition of the person I haven't seen for a long time....I always say..."you look great". There are enough downers in life as it is....
pie-eater 207
Don't know about saying great if they are looking not great at all, but I would certainly try to say something positive.

oblivion 5
I know when a distant relative was ill and had only months to live, it was real difficult knowing what to say. Obviously you couldn't say they looked good because they didn't. And they didn't want to be reminded about the grim reality all the time. Asking 'how are you?' as well seems odd. Muzukashii desu ne. Chriselle 158
Ok...now we're talking about the extremes. Saying or not saying the right thing can haunt you for the rest of your life. About 10 ago while back in Canada for summer vacation I saw a family friend who was my dad's best bud ever since I could remember who was terminal with cancer. I didn't say anything.... seriously speechless. I think about that moment often...
