Scientology.

It all seems a bit bonkers doesn't it.

Any more bonkers than other religions?

Any "scientologists" here?

Scientology is a body of beliefs and related practices created by L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986), starting in 1952, as a successor to his earlier self-help system, Dianetics. Hubbard characterized Scientology as a religion, and in 1953 incorporated the Church of Scientology in Camden, New Jersey.

Scientology teaches that people are immortal beings who have forgotten their true nature. Its method of spiritual rehabilitation is a type of counselling known as auditing, in which practitioners aim to consciously re-experience painful or traumatic events in their past in order to free themselves of their limiting effects. Study materials and auditing courses are made available to members in return for specified donations. Scientology is legally recognized as a tax-exempt religion in the United States and some other countries, and the Church of Scientology emphasizes this as proof that it is a bona fide religion. In other countries, notably Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, Scientology does not have comparable religious status.

A large number of organizations overseeing the application of Scientology have been established, the most notable of these being the Church of Scientology. Scientology sponsors a variety of social-service programs. These include the Narconon anti-drug program, the Criminon prison rehabilitation program, the Study Tech education methodology, a volunteer organization, a business-management method, and a set of moral guidelines expressed in a booklet called The Way to Happiness.

The Church of Scientology is one of the most controversial new religious movements to have arisen in the 20th century. It has often been described as a cult that financially defrauds and abuses its members, charging exorbitant fees for its spiritual services. The Church of Scientology has consistently used litigation against such critics, and its aggressiveness in pursuing its foes has been condemned as harassment. Further controversy has focused on Scientology's belief that souls ("thetans") reincarnate and have lived on other planets before living on Earth, and that some of the related teachings are not revealed to practitioners until they have paid thousands of dollars to the Church of Scientology. Another controversial belief held by Scientologists is that the practice of psychiatry is destructive and abusive and must be abolished.

I have a friend that got mixed up in this for a while, all seems pretty bogus to me. It seems to have worked out real well for Tom Cruise, he seems like a really well balanced person with a completely stable family life.

Scary faith, scary people.

Try getting out once you are in... It is like The Bretheren or The Mafia - you can check out any time you like but you can NEVER LEAVE.

Ah, a women of taste - quoting one of the best songs of all time.

Last thing I remember, I was

Running for the door

I had to find the passage back

To the place I was before

"Relax, " said the night man,

"We are programmed to receive.

You can check-out any time you like,

But you can never leave! "

Just finished... my band playing a couple sets at a local livehouse. Fun... but too loud so my tinnitis is on full ring right now. Like the old Bob Seger tune Turn the Page......."with the echos of the amplifiers ringing in my head".

OT, any "fundamentalist" religious group is a major concern. Most of them have zero tolerance for anyone with even slightly differing views from their "absolute truth".

FWIW, I taught sunday school (Presbyterian, if it makes a difference) some years ago. I was trying to introduce some comparative religious studies, show the kids the similarities between the main religions - the Minister's kid was in the class. Long story short, daddy called me to the office, said "You cannot do that!" so I quit ... never been back.

And, never been back to the churches - tolerance levels there are low, despite the rhetoric. Anyone different is not to be tolerated, ours is the "one true religion", all the rest are heathens. Familiar themes across all relilgious groups. And, despite christians professing tolerance, many of them are amongst the worst!

It is ironic when religions try and use logic to justify their belief in an illogical construct

I'm anti-religion, I don't think they should be allowed to have single faith schools, in places like Norn Ireland and the west coast of Scotland, pigeon holing kids at such a young age just exacerbates the problem

The simple solution to religion is to end its tax exemptions.

Most religions would close shop as they'd no longer be a money-for-nothing scam.

And the ones that limped along would at least be paying their own freight.
