This is Jeff Anderson. From what I have been able to put together, he died last night. He was competing at the Toyoya Big Air contest, albeit not when he died. I have heard that he died from a fall off a hotel staircase (not snowboarding), although I am not sure of any more details. I thought I'd post this message and picture as a tribute to another great rider who has lost their life this year. \:\(

Here's an article from the Mainichi. It was on the Mainichi site hours before the Japan Today put a shorter [edited?] version on their webpage.

The Mainichi version insinuates that alcohol was involved. The boarder was allegedly drinking free beers at a party, then rode the 5-story spiral rail at 3 a.m.

"US snowboarder slides to death down hotel handrail

NAGANO -- An American pro snowboarder fell 15 meters to his death early Sunday morning after sliding down the handrail of a fourth-floor staircase at a hotel he was staying, police said.

Jeffrey Lin Anderson, 23, was immediately taken to hospital but was declared dead shortly after, Iiyama police officers said.

Several hours earlier, the snowboarder apparently had been drinking beer at a Saturday night party at Panorama Land Kijimadaira hotel in Nagano Prefecture, they said.

Anderson, accompanied by his friends, began sliding down on the railings of the spiral staircases of the hotel shortly after 3 a.m., Sunday.

After successfully sliding down the fifth-floor staircase, he lost balance on the fourth-floor handrail so he fell some 15 meters through the stairwell, smashing his head on the ground floor, the officers said.

Anderson had been staying in a sixth-floor room of the hotel since last Thursday to take part in a snowboard competition at the local Kijimadaira ski course that kicked off Friday.

The event organizers held a welcome party starting at 9 p.m., Saturday, where beer was served free-of-charge for the guests. Hundreds of fans, snowboarders and event organizers took part in the two-hour party. (Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 23, 2003)"

Unfortunately, 23 is still an age at which you have an inflated sense of your competence and indestructibility - I know I did, although not to the same extent. Attempting to slide down something like that when drunk is tempting fate sufficiently for an honorable mention in the Darwin awards. It's a shame his friends didn't exert a better influence on him.

whoa those comments (on japan today) r a bit harsh.

sometimes people do stupid things (some more often than others) and its unfortunate when it ends tragically.

i guess people who feel they never behave foolishly (which is seldom true) feel comfortable saying "serves u right."

[the post about snowboarders came after your post, indosnm.]

those japan today posters drive me crazy. . . mostly boring people with nothing better to do or talk about than the misguided headlines of a tabloid.

but there are alot of posts on their topics - if you check out their long threads - they usually consist of people flaming each other back and forth.

I read a thread about snowboarding at the olympics, which made it to japantoday because it was mainstream news, and you had all these morons who had never snowboarded posting their worthless opinions about something they had no idea about. and the same kinda crap - cheap shots, flames back and forth - just ridiculous.

these people need to get themselves up on a mountain and gain some perspective.

but i also gotta say that I'm glad that this forum is regulated. although it seems a little heavily edited and guarded from time to time, i think it keeps the flame-happy people away so that constructive people can offer their opinions and ask questions about all things snow or not.

The flamed out message boards are no fun to be on - for evidence just check out japantoday, or transworldsnowboarding for that matter. just juvenile.

As somebody who has been snowboarding, I think I'm justified in saying that matey hasn't done any snowboarders any favours by dying like a fool.

With the widespread perception of snowboarders as being reckless, inept, and pointlessly rebellious, a high profile death like this is just going to confirm the very largely incorrect perception that many people have of the sport, perhaps especially in this country. To me, it confirms the impression I have of a suicidal tendency of 'pro-boarders'. Enough big flying, these people don't have wings and landing gear.

By going to his death like a lemming, at 3 am, quite possibly drunk, young Jeff has brought unwanted attention to snowboarding. Imagine how things are going to go in Kijimadaira and snowboarding from here.

Sad news indeed.

Just for the record though - apart from a number of words being blocked on here, there are really very very few times when we move in and change/edit/delete posts on these Forums (and if we do, only after a lot of deliberation).

Posts on here though are read, and the reason we do "moderate" as such is to prevent SJ Forums from decline into a mess of nonsense, as you pointed out.

Thanks!

That's really a shame. My condolences to his family, they're going to have a difficult time ahead...

I taped the Toyo Big Air Comp last night, and watched it tonight. I guess he didn't make it out of the prelims cause they didn't show him...

Ocean, not having a dig but it seems to me that you think that the whole world is against snowboarding!!!

Wether he had been a skiier/skater/surfer etc etc it still could have happened. Damn I know that i have done some really stupid stuff when I was a grom, and somehow (i wander how sometimes) I am still here. Its part of the whole being a grom thing to do crazy shiit.. But people coming into sports like this later in life unfortunately miss all the fun i reckon!

Reading comprehension test - Level 6

-------------------------------------

"widespread perception"

"the very largely incorrect perception that many people have of the sport, perhaps especially in this country"

Judging by the above sentences, does Ocean11

a) think that the whole world is against snowboarding!!!

B) think that some people have a low opinion of snowboarding, especially in Japan

c) think that the whole world is against snowboarding!!!

(Choose one statement)

-------------------------------------

I've read plenty of opinions to the effect that falling to your death down a staircase is all in a day's work for these bright young boarders, that it's actually fun (but in a tragic sort of way), and that it could happen to anyone. Also that only a killjoy who knows nothing about the sport would condemn it.

These opinions are complete bollocks of course, and anybody who has survived the follies of youth ought to know that 'stupid is as stupid dies', and really ought to seek to discourage others from throwing away their lives in a similar fashion.

Also, you might want to ask why the sponsors of these people don't launch enquiries into why their talent (read 'meat') is riding staircases drunk at 3 am.

And rahij, you're new here, but I would avoid mindless 'I think so too' posts. We already have at least one specialist in that field.

Hey I might be new here but it does not mean that my posts, however short, are any less than yours. I was simple stating what I thought after reading lots of the posts on here over the last few days. I don't have maybe as much time as you to write essays every day, but I think I am free to post messages of whatever length I wish. Thank you!

Terrible news.

Take a look at www.transworldsnowboarding.com

They did a feature on Jeff Anderson last month.

On a different note, I don`t really care what other people think of snowboarders. It`s not important. If there weren`t people like Jeff Anderson out there pushing the limits snowboarding would never have become the sport that it is. For that we owe him big thanks.

Yeah probably coz the Skiiers are so Faaarking LAME in this country that all they do (disclaimer..most, not ALL) stick to the runs,

Ocean, a, b & c.

Not every skier here is lame, the same as not every snowboarder is stupid. It is the person who decides what they will do. In the case of our Mr. Anderson he made a bad choice at the wrong moment.

Skiers and riders are pushing into the next new thing urban rails... I think it is a marketing push buy companies to sell more in areas where the mountains suck.

Lets stick to the point a boy died and its tragic for his family and friends.
