Japanese food to look try, if you don't like fish/seafood

Recommended Posts

OK a food thread, but hey it's something to look forward to when you visit Japan.

Well, unfortunately I just don't really like fish other than some basic fried white fish haha. And seafood ain't my thing either.

So I'm interested to hear what people recommend I should try or look out for when I am in Japan. Meat all ok - not raw! - and pretty much anything else ok.

What do you recommend?

Thanks!

yakiniku (korean BBQ)

Yakitori (grilled meat on skewers)

Tonkatsu

Okonomiyaki (ask them not to put in the baby shrimp and seaweed)

Kushiyaki (like yakitori only bigger skewers)

Shabu-Shabu (thinly sliced raw meat that you dip into boiling broth to flash cook it)

I'm the same, don't eat any seafood. There are plenty of options in Japan though

Pork belly, either grilled or stewed. Very fatty, but melt in the mouth goodness.

Japanese people value chicken wings and thighs over breast meat. Less volume, but much more taste.

Call it the "tenderloins" here.

Good stuff, thanks.

Mochi and manju sound intriguing.

Had some "gyoza" which were pretty unremarkable but a friend who had been to Japan said it was pretty poor and not like what you get in Japan.

Yakiniku sounds great.

Nothing like.

It wasn't but I have heard some horror stories about Wagamama both about the cost and quality.
