Scallywag 0
OK a food thread, but hey it's something to look forward to when you visit Japan. Well, unfortunately I just don't really like fish other than some basic fried white fish haha. And seafood ain't my thing either. So I'm interested to hear what people recommend I should try or look out for when I am in Japan. Meat all ok - not raw! - and pretty much anything else ok. What do you recommend? Thanks! klingon 10
I would recommend - tonkatsu (deep fried pork) - yakiniku Yum, going to yakiniku tonight
Tubby Beaver 209
yakiniku (korean BBQ) Yakitori (grilled meat on skewers) Tonkatsu Okonomiyaki (ask them not to put in the baby shrimp and seaweed) Kushiyaki (like yakitori only bigger skewers) Shabu-Shabu (thinly sliced raw meat that you dip into boiling broth to flash cook it) I'm the same, don't eat any seafood. There are plenty of options in Japan though
indosnm 0
sasami.. sorry it's raw but the taste is magic. other wise... Yaki niku!
RobBright 35
Sasami is a cut of chicken, think its the juiciest part of the breast. It is sometimes served raw, or sometimes cooked in yakitori.
RobBright 35
Kushiyaki. Yakitori. Onigiri. Nabe. Soba. Udon. Tempura. Tofu. Rice. Gyudon. Butadon. Japanese curry aka slop on a plate. Wagyu. Ramen.
Tubby Beaver 209
Japanese Curry.....I prefer to give it the title of School Dinner Curry! Apparently Japanese Curry was introduced by Brits, so its deffo school dinner curry
NoFakie 45
Pork belly, either grilled or stewed. Very fatty, but melt in the mouth goodness. Japanese people value chicken wings and thighs over breast meat. Less volume, but much more taste.
brit-gob 9
Soba and tempura

klingon 10
Mochi and manju snacks.
Scallywag 0
Good stuff, thanks. Mochi and manju sound intriguing. Had some "gyoza" which were pretty unremarkable but a friend who had been to Japan said it was pretty poor and not like what you get in Japan. Yakiniku sounds great.
pie-eater 207
If the gyoza was at Wagamama, forget it! Nothing like.
Tubby Beaver 209
Scallywag, anything you get in Wagamama's you can forget, its NOT Japanese food. Its shite.
RobBright 35
The beer is good though.
