veronica 2
OK so I have just over 14,500 songs on my ipod. There's 14 different versions of the song Personal Jesus on there. Earlier this morning I was playing on random and 5 songs in a row it was that song - each one, one of the different versions. What's the probability of that happening?! Come on any maths dudes on here impress me?
panhead_pete 27
Is your iPod set to pick the kind of music you like?
veronica 2
No, just normal shuffle.
RobBright 35
Depends on the algorithm used to determine a random song.
RobBright 35
But here goes. 1*(1/14499)*(1/14499)*(1/14499)*(1/14499) The first song was not random as you chose it, whilst the ipod will never immediately play the same song again.
veronica 2
Actually the first song was random - it wasn't the first one this morning....

Schneebored 0
Holy moly...14 versions of 'Personal Jesus'. I know. 1. Depeche Mode 2. Marilyn Manson 3. Johnny Cash ?? what are the others?
veronica 2
All Depeche Mode. I do actually have more but they are not all on the ipod at the moment. Actually I do have the Johnny Cash one, that is seperate, so I have 15 I suppose! The Marilyn Manson one does not deserve to exist.

veronica 2
All different mixes. I think I have over 30 in total.

He has every album, track, version, bootleg, cover.... you name it. Going through his collection one day I found an album by a band called Dread Zeppelin. They cover Zeppelin songs in a reggae style and their lead singer is an Elvis impersonator....you couldn't make this up!
veronica 2
Well, I don't usually listen to them all together! But when it comes to DM I have all of the official stuff and a fair bit of bootleg and unofficial material. Not into covers though really though there's a fair few out there. Tubby Beaver 209
I don't think that the "shuffle" function is actually random on an iPod. It often throws up similar combinations of songs from the same bands.
griller 9
Depends on the settings you have doesn't it?
Tubby Beaver 209
maybe I dunno, I've never fiddled with the settings and just pressed the shuffle button
pie-eater 207
Does seem to bring up a fair few of the same sometimes, although perhaps that is just imagined. But 5 of the same song certainly sounds improbable!

veronica 2
I'm confused now who I should be impressed with! I would guess a big difference between the two below: 1*(1/14499)*(1/14499)*(1/14499)*(1/14499) (14/14500)x(13/14499)x(12/14498)x(11/14497)x(10/14496) !
