LiquidX 0
That is the question. All the jargon confuses me and I get lost in info I don't really understand. Need to get a new tv soon though coz current one isn't digital. So.... what did you get and why? Might help me a bit. Cheers.
LiquidX 0
Looking for maybe a 37 inch, possibly 42 if there's not much difference in price. Or whatever!
Tubby Beaver 209
I heard that the Plasma's can burn themselves out and when they go they can't be repaired. That apparently doesn't happen with LCD ones (or if it does then they can be repaired)
LiquidX 0
I read that too but it seems to be more of a problem with earlier plasmas and less so now.....
thursday 1
LED lighted LCD. Non-LED LCD panels have life of only ~60,000 hours (6.8 years) LEDs are also more energy efficient emitting less heat.
NoFakie 45
We got a one with a video built in. It was only 10000 extra. Separate HDD recorders are well expensive, especially relative to how little of Japanese tv is worth recording. Its a Panasonic. Go to a shop and see which one you like is best. Try turning it off the BS hi channel that it will be tuned to in the shop because that channel has a higher res than all the others. Don't get a shiny one if your pad is super bright. LiquidX 0
Thanks. They all look similar in the shops. Interestingly, the Sonys seem cheaper with more spec. Hmmm. What do you do with old tellys?
thursday 1
Give it away, give it to the delivery man, sell it on Ebay, donate to the local tip.
NoFakie 45
Some companies will collect them for nothing. Your council will probably want a few thousand as a recycling fee. If you don't have one to get rid off, you can drive a harder bargain at the shop (or just buy online).
panhead_pete 27
If its near a natural light source, window etc - LCD. If well away then a plasma is OK.
snowdude 44
We got a Sony 42" LCD, very very clear, especially when viewing digital TV, sky channels etc. Still very clear with normal analogue channels, but it will not be as clear as digital, much better than the old box TV's by miles. We got LCD because when I looked at Plasma in the shop they really didn't look any better than LCD, if anything plasma tend to have a more pale colour not as rich as LCD. And I looked at all makes. Plasma costs more though and like in the post above we were told that they do not last as long! But I guess it comes down to preferance and place that you want to use it. We have only had our TV for about a year so time will tell I guess as to how long ot lasts. I connect my computer to the TV as my comp is HD also like the TV so movies are great, very clear big screen and with 5,1ch surround sound is as close as you can get to being in a cinema. thursday 1
what dude? 42" close to a cinema?
thursday 1
I've had plasma and LCD. I prefer the LCD for the sharpness. Plasma has a very hot screen.
scouser 4
Plasma has (had) traditionally better contrast didn't it. Black blacks etc. Seems my info on this subject is back from 5 years ago, sure things have moved on since then.
NoFakie 45
The rules for eco points (i.e., government discount) on tvs have just been tightened up, so slightly older ones that no longer qualify must be being sold off at big discounts. See kakaku.com etc.
LiquidX 0
Zoning in on a Sony and a Panasonic. The Sony one is about 60,000 yen, 40inch, but if I get that seems I can get 23000 ecopoints/yen so effectively bringing the thing in at under 4 man. That sounds good to me. Already got an HDD recorder that I don't use any more that I can connect up. I think tomorrow will be 'buying tv day'.
thursday 1
LCD or Plasma?
iiyamadude 6
Sony only make LCD now.
Thundercat 60
My wife has been begging me to buy a new tv recently because ours isn't digital either. I don't watch tv at all so I'm not all that inclined... 4 man~ish doesn't seem that bad though so I may reconsider...
thursday 1
4man for a 40 inch TV is ridiculously cheap.
iiyamadude 6
Well, 6 man. But you get those ecopoints.
big-will 7
But effectively 4 man with the 2 man coming back. Anyway 6 man sounds crazy cheap! How much were those things just 5 years ago?
Tubby Beaver 209
where is that from LiquidX? Cos that is a great deal!!
LiquidX 0
That price was on rakuten. I'll be checking the same in the shops tomorrow and terrorising them with my "internet prices" printed out.
