Wayne Rooney can expect to discover on Monday whether he will face disciplinary action for his swearing into a television camera as he celebrated his hat-trick at West Ham United.

The Manchester United forward's three goals yesterday helped his team to a 4-2 victory at Upton Park, which took them seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

But, after completing his treble, the striker uttered an audible expletive into a television camera as he celebrated. The Football Association's director Sir Trevor Brooking confirmed on Sunday morning that the governing body will be investigating Rooney's behaviour.

"Tomorrow there will be a decision," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme. "It was a surprise, after scoring a hat-trick, to react that way. It is something we will have to look at."

Rooney has already apologised for swearing. His outburst prompted an on-air apology from the broadcaster Sky Sports.

In a statement released by United, Rooney said: "I want to apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my goal celebration, especially any parents or children that were watching. Emotions were running high, and on reflection my heat-of-the-moment reaction was inappropriate. It was not aimed at anyone in particular."

What a naughty boy.

Why couldn't he have just said "It feels marvellous to have scored a hat-trick today and I would like to thank my colleagues. Jolly fine feeling".

I bet they will ban him you know.

Bound to happen.

Fool for doing it but apparently he was having to put up with a massive amount of abuse, you can understand the sentiment. Let me repeat though, idiot.

Wayne Rooney faces two-match FA suspension for swearing

Wayne Rooney faces a two-match ban by the Football Association for using offensive language during Manchester United's 4-2 win at West Ham.

The United striker swore into a pitchside camera after completing his hat-trick at Upton Park.

The England international has until 1800 BST on Tuesday to appeal against the charge.

If he accepts it, he will receive a two-match ban - if he denies the charge his hearing will be on Wednesday.

Rooney quickly apologised for the incident after a victory which moved Manchester United seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The 25-year-old was influential in earning the three points for the Red Devils as he grabbed his three goals in 14 minutes to help his side recover from 2-0 down.
