coldcat 0
I wonder if anybody has been in this situation before. I have to renew my passport next year, but my visa is still valid until 2009. Can I travel with both my new and old passport and show immigration at the airport in Japan my old passport with my valid visas?
Ocean11 0
No, you have to go La Migra and get your visa transferred.
coldcat 0
Really, I actually read in a website, Japantoday, that you can actually show immigration at the airport your old passport with the visa. So I was wondering if anybody has actually done that. Anway, I think that the safest is to do what you said O11.
thursday 1
yes you can. My friends do this all the time as their passports get filled up very quickly. Airline people.
dale#1 1
I was in the same situation and was told I needed to get my visa in the new passport within a certain period. I can't quite remember how long that period was...
sunrise 0
Yes, I have done it. And if I travel before my current visa expires (which I probably will) I'll do it again.
brit-gob 9
As usual with these kind of things, hearing differing stories!
fjef 0
I just got a new passport and went to immigration and transferred my new visa and re-enrty permit to the new passport...I'm all-in-one again.
coldcat 0
fjef, is there a lot of paper-work involved? How easy was it? Knowing the japanese system I can expect something as simple as this to be much more hassle than it needs to be. Please surprise me.
sunrise 0
I didn't want to go thru the hassle of even going to immigration if I didn't have to, so since 2005 I've been using 2 passports when travelling.
farquah 0
A colleague of mine transfered over to the new passport, in all took her 20mins. really easy procedure and hardly any paper work. Also transferred over the re-entry permit.
muikabochi 208
Problem for us country folk is it involves a trip to the immigration office. The one I have to go to is at Niigata Airport. I live in Muikamachi, which is a 2 hour drive away (even on the expressway). So it ends up being almost a day trip.
indosnm 0
I've done it. got there at 5 mins to opening time and was out 5 mins later... Visa & re entry!
tsondaboy 0
I am in a similar situation as you. I just got my new passport but still have my US visa on the old one (I have transferred the J-visa to the new one). I called the US embassy in Tokyo and they assured me that I will be able to enter the states if I carry both of my passports with me. I am flying on the 11th, so if things don’t go as planed I will let you know.
gerard 6
My visa and re-entry are in my old cancelled passport. I've been traveling with both for the last two years. Immigration officials haven't been phased and I've had no problems so I'd say don't worry about it.
coldcat 0
Thanks EVERYONE for the advice. SJ is really great, you can talk about almost anything, and always you'll find somebody willing to help or just give his/her comments. Tsondaboy, if anything happens, yes, I'd like to know. But I hope everything will be O.K. Have a nice trip. If you are hitting any slopes over there, I'd like to hear some stories about it. I've been to the US just once, but it was Summer.
