Plucky you have a thing about Oprah don't you. Been watching a fair bit yourself?

> Ocean, do you still think Bush whipped up Katrina using a magic wand and a spell?

The straw man rhetorical device! Always a favourite with people of very moderate intelligence. My point was that nobody should give aid to the US without a quid pro quo on a range of issues, including, but not limited to, global warming. The assumption behind my point was that Bush is in large part personally responsible for losing the sympathy of the whole world due to his refusal to listen to sane opinion even from within the US. Did you somehow misread that as saying "Bush whipped up Katrina using a magic wand and a spell"? How very stupid.

My favourite analyses of this were written by Paul Craig Roberts and Pat Buchanan, both notable left-wingers (who appear regularly on Oprah).

> The extrapolations to the rest of the US population being applied based on looters in NOLA is pathetic.

No you're wrong. Let's see what NY or Chicago look like when they get flooded. You think people will be lining up quietly for their little bottle of water? As I noted on another thread, when American writers talk about peak oil, without exception they assume that the thin veneer of civilization in the US will fall off very quickly. I wonder why that is.

So Plucky, instead of making more fantastic, ignorant, dishonest, wrong, and offensive comments about me, why don't you take that saliva-soaked corner of the 'anti-American' comfort blanket out of your mouth and just accept that what happened in New Orleans is representative of what your country has become? Your country is f:cked for the duration.

This article really tugged at my heartstrings and made me reach for my credit card to help out.

"Gas Shock Echoes Across USA"

> On a more profound level, the secondary effects are starting to take hold. In Phillips, Wis., police officers walk beats instead of patrolling in cars to save gas. In Arkansas, attendance at a county fair dropped, the organizer believes, because people didn't want to drive there.

Profound indeed. Fat people being forced to walk. It's only right that Japan should contribute its strategic reserve so these fine people don't have to "have officers patrol on foot one hour a day".

> "If it goes up to $4 a gallon, I don't know what we're going to do," says Robin Biesterveld, 38, a medical transcriptionist in San Jose, Calif. Thanks to gas prices, she and her husband have recently cut back on extras such as dining out and dry cleaning

I thought dry cleaning was a human right...?

> So he's been trying to find any way possible to save on trucking costs. He just hired someone to - as Sherman called it - "efficiently palletize" shipments. In other words, the employee will pack what might've gone on two trucks into one.

Oh, so you invaded Iraq so you could waste fuel by being just inefficient and careless. Well, I can sympathize with that. Where should I send my donation?

> In Chandler, Ariz., Nezar Alsai, owner of the independent Blue Diamond Fuel, says customers were screaming at him Thursday about the $3.09 price of regular.

Definitely a screaming issue that. Probably a shooting issue soon. Let me send a contribution for ammo.

> In Alabama, Gov. Bob Riley asked citizens to "do their part by purchasing and using fuel responsibly." He added, "I'm hoping this will be a short-term disruption."

Then we can go back to using fuel irresponsibly again.

BBC is reporting 5 shot dead now

At least five people have reportedly been shot dead by police in the US city of New Orleans, where a massive effort is underway to aid hurricane survivors.

The incident started when contractors escorted by officers were shot at while crossing a bridge.

My cousin lives in New Orleans. Well, lived perhaps I should say. I haven't spoken to him myself but I hear from family that his family are all alive and well - but their home has pretty much been wiped out. Could have been worse. Mad scenes on the tv though, incredible they were not more prepared for this.

I'm glad you are finding so much joy in the suffering of others. I can't believe anybody even puts up with the sh*t and bile you spew on here anymore.

FACT - Neither George Bush nor his policies caused this hurricane to be any worse than it would have been. 5 years in office is not nearly enough time to mess up the global climate.

FACT - Georgie boy is not the only one to be held accountable for the levy breaches in New Orleans. Mismangeament stretches back well over 20 years.

FACT - The federal response time for this crisis, headed up by 'The Shrub' was pathetic. Rolling FEMA in to The DHS was one of the worst moves ever.

FACT - Tragedies bring out the worst and best in people. It happens everywhere, not just the US. The media in the US DOES lean left and is not that supportive of the current administration, hence the focus on mostly the bad (I'm not sure about TV since I haven't watched TV in over 5 years).

FACT - Ocean11 is a blatant opportunist using this situation to further his America and Americans Suck platform. Instead of offering any condolences, he's simply sat in his safe haven in BFE Japan and fired off pot-shots and attacks at any chance possible. He shows no human sympathy, offers no form of help, and offers up nothing but rancid verbal spew while stroking himself to images of the destruction.

FACT - Ocean doesn't know jack sh*t about the United States of America. He's lived in countries smaller than individual states in the great US and has no idea about differences between people in the country or the diversity that is on display. Things work differently here. America is not a 90% + homogeneous society like Japan or England or most countries in Europe.

FACT - George Bush and his administration will go down as the worst ever in US history.

Plucky, here's a FACT for you. Americans have always been amazingly big headed about not much, but recently especially, they seem incapable of talking about themselves or their country without throwing in a 'great' or 'good', and denigrating some other country for imaginary infractions. Now comes a fully forseeable and largely preventable human disaster and proves what a lot of old cobblers this greatness and goodness is, in FACT. If I had a condolence to offer it would be "I'm sorry you've been so stupid all along, and I hope you get over it soon".

As for not watching TV, perhaps you should. Try Fox. You'll begin to see my point, and see it how sounds just like you do.

In this pitifully small and contemptible country, we've just had a typhoon bigger and stronger than Katrina and big enough to blot out the entire nation. It caused widespread flooding and damage. 7 people died. Where are your condolences? And why aren't the great and good people of Japan out screaming on the streets, demanding help from everybody, and murdering and raping each other? Get some fricken perspective mate.

FACT - Plucky lives in Alaska because his taste for kiddie porn makes it the only place he's accepted (yeah, we can all pull FACTs out of thin air. Sophisticated innit.)

I threw that 'Great' in just for you, dear. I knew you would pick up on it. Your hate is becoming predictable. I also love the way you put no separation between the American people and America's messed up politicians. You claim we have to take responsibility for whom we elect. Well, 50% of us didn't vote for monkey boy and don't appreciate what he's done to our country. Most of us have no idea why anyone would even consider supporting Bush any more. It's baffling. But, according to you, I do support Bush as do all Americans simply because I don't denounce my entire country. Well, there is a hell of a lot more to life than politics and a hell of a lot more to America than its current leaders. This is what you have no clue about and never will.

The two typhoons don't compare and you know that is a weak argument. Completely different situations. While I may not be offering my condolences publicly, I feel bad for anyone caught in any situation like this.

At least I didn't go on to a public forum and belittle the dead and suffering like you have done with the New Orleans tragedy.

Kill your TV

PS - I can't believe I'm arguing with a British citizen over my distaste for Bush. What do I have to do/say to make it clear that I do not support this guy? Why is it so hard to believe that you can still love your country even if things are in a bit of turmoil at the moment? This is like arguing with American citizens about the war and the troops. Republicans just can't grasp that you can be against the war in Iraq but still support the troops. I'm so sick of closed-mindedness in this world.

> according to you, I do support Bush as do all Americans simply because I don't denounce my entire country

How many times are you going to repeat that particular lie? You lie as frequently and as clumsily as your President (who you don't like apparently, yes I know, you've said so before.)

BTW, perhaps you might think about NOT supporting your troops (unless of course they're actually defending your great country, IN your great country). Open your mind a bit about what supporting them means in practice.

As for 'belittling the dead and suffering', I haven't. Although I think this laughable controversy over the word 'refugee' belittles them far more than I could.

----

President Bush, who has spent days trying to deflect criticism that he responded sluggishly to the disaster, weighed in on Tuesday. "The people we're talking about are not refugees," he said. "They are Americans and they need the help and love and compassion of our fellow citizens."

----

So let's get this straight: Americans cannot by definition be refugees, (although they can be looters...?)

After invading a perfectly legit and decent topic on the snow forum, I'm done with you. Have a nice life hiding out from the world's problems in Japan! You are the epitome of an armchair quarterback.

You will never truly understand America just like you will never truly understand all of the complexities of the Japanese. To think otherwise would be utterly arrogant.

To suggest I believe I could would be utterly moronic...

Yamakashi, if you want to see what it really looks like in New Orleans, and what the people there are seeing, check out ogrish.com. As ever, they have the nitty-gritty.

Yes, I sometimes have a look. If the mainstream media showed what some of the stuff that is done in our name actually looks like, it might elicit a more appropriate response. Instead they hide it all from us so that we aren't too shocked and disgusted, and so that what the pols say about it sounds a little less like bullshit.

lol.gif Come on, Ocean, some of these people had no choice!

Where else are they going to get essential stuff like electronic goods and Nike shoes in a national disaster like this when the government is totally useless?

Sure, most will have had no choice. Why not take food and other necessities required to survive, especially when they'll be unmarketable anyway? But for everybody to be sensitizing themselves to the possible racist content of the word 'refugee' (hint: there isn't any), and stigmatizing desperate people as 'looters' is, well, laughable.

Compassionate George weighed in too to condemn them. "Now you just put those rolls of damp toilet paper BACK on the shelf, for shame!"

President Bush Sells Louisiana Back to the French

President Bush and a giddy Jacques Chirac shake hands on the deal.

BATON ROUGE, LA. - The White House announced today that President Bush has successfully sold the state of Louisiana back to the French at more than double its original selling price of $11,250,000.

"This is a bold step forward for America," said Bush. "And America will be stronger and better as a result. I stand here today in unity with French Prime Minister Jack Sharaq, who was so kind to accept my offer of Louisiana in exchange for 25 million dollars cash."

The state, ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, will cost hundreds of billions of dollars to rebuild.

"Jack understands full well that this one's a 'fixer upper,'" said Bush. "He and the French people are quite prepared to pump out all that water, and make Louisiana a decent place to live again. And they've got a lot of work to do. But Jack's assured me, if it's not right, they're going to fix it."

The move has been met with incredulity from the beleaguered residents of Louisiana.

"Shuba-pie!" said New Orleans resident Willis Babineaux. "Frafer-perly yum kom drabby sham!"

However, President Bush's decision has been widely lauded by Republicans.

"This is an unexpected but brilliant move by the President," said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. "Instead of spending billions and billions, and billions of dollars rebuilding the state of Louisiana , we've just made 25 million dollars in pure profit."

"This is indeed a smart move," commented Fox News analyst Brit Hume. "Not only have we stopped the flooding in our own budget, we've made money on the deal. Plus, when the god-awful French are done fixing it up, we can easily invade and take it back again."

The money gained from 'T'he Louisiana Refund' is expected to be immediately pumped into the rebuilding of Iraq .

The picture that was in the email I got this in was pretty funny too... lol.gif

This is in fact very old news - George declared a crusade before invading Afghanistan, and his communications with God have been reported extensively at least a year ago. And it should surprise nobody that an American president is a religious fanatic. It was religious fanaticism that drove the first Americans to leave England in the first place.
