soubriquet 0
Yes. I'm disappointed with the result, but it shows there's still life in cricket.
indosnm 0
A win for OZ would have been better, glad we didn't lose though.
Dims 0
That was a great game. English bowlers esp Flintoff and Jones are looking mean with the reverse swing. Ozzies did really well to pull off a draw though. Happy with that. Those 2 runs at the end of the last test are going to be very importent in this series I think. It is great to see some solid competition in test cricket again after so many years of aussie domination. Great stuff!!

soubriquet 0
Well, Australia are going to have to fight for a draw this time. Shame about the rain on Thursday, spoilt England's momentum. Still, regardless of the outcome, Australia have been outplayed and made to fight for the first time in 16 years. How's the feeling in India Rahul?
brit-gob 9
I see England need just a draw in the last one to win now...
soubriquet 0
Yep. Australia need a win to retain the ashes, England just the draw. It kept me up till two last night, what a finish.
nzlegend 1
I was listening to BBC radio last night, it was nail biting, I really thought England was going to blow it, but they hung in there, Kudos to Warne and Lee who bowled with passion and heart to push England to the end. Lets hope England win the series, it will be great for cricket in general if Australias dominance is ended. Poor Australia, their Cricket team in serious danger of losisng the Ashes, their Rugby team in the worst form for a long long time.
soubriquet 0
Poor Australia my arse. I spent 15 years between Kalgoorlie and Mt Isa, via Newman and Broken Hill being lectured by Aussies, Kiwis and Jaapies, on why the Poms are no good at rugby or cricket. I'm enjoying this. soubriquet 0
Ponting a hypocrite: Kiwis From correspondents in Auckland, New Zealand September 3, 2005 RICKY Ponting's Ashes substitution fielder blast has struck its rawest nerve across the Tasman where the Australian cricketers have been pilloried as supreme hypocrites. Ponting's comments that England's consistent use of county substitutes was disgraceful and against the spirit of the game has New Zealanders' eyes rolling and blood boiling. The country's biggest daily newspaper, the New Zealand Herald, and television news reports have taken aim at the besieged captain for a "tiresome rant" at odds with Australia's history of ignoring the spirit of the game. At the forefront of NZ minds is Trevor Chappell's infamous underarm bowling in 1981 but the Herald's chief cricket writer Richard Boock also recalled a litany of questionable tactics. "Remarkable. Just when we've seen it all; an Australian captain not only acknowledging the existence of a 'spirit with the game', but even accusing the opposition of not playing within it'," wrote Boock. "Where will it all end? "Brett Lee condemning beamers? Shane Warne promoting fidelity? What about the chances of Glenn McGrath discovering humility? "Hypocrisy apparently knows no bounds within the Australian dressing room." Ponting was fined 75 per cent of his match fee for remonstrating with umpire Aleem Dar and abusing England's fielders and coach Duncan Fletcher after being run out by a replacement fielder during the fourth Test at Nottingham. He landed himself in more hot water when he took a further shot at Fletcher on Melbourne radio this week. "I think it is an absolute disgrace that the spirit of the game is being treated like that," Ponting said at the time. The enthralling series, led 2-1 by England, has also captured the imagination of NZ fans but they have long memories. "Our history has been littered with skeletons of being hard-done by at the hands of Australia," Boock said today. "I thought Australia had conceded all rights to argue spirit of the game. "Faced with playing within the spirit, or the rules of the game, Australian captains have invariably settled for the latter." On top of the underarm debacle and sledging, the Kiwis haven't forgotten McGrath bowling full and wide outside off-stump to deny the Black Caps stealing an unlikely final-day Test victory in Brisbane in 2001. Also NZ could have been on the receiving end when a one-day go-slow against the West Indies at the 1999 World Cup was designed to see the Black Caps knocked out of the tournament's play-off stage. "Ponting probably doesn't appreciate it at the moment, but his musings have so far proved one of the most entertaining features of the fourth Test aftermath, and without doubt the funniest," said Boock. "If he doesn't watch himself, people will soon start turning up to hear him talk." AAP
Ocean11 0
Even in my family (none of whom actually know the rules of the game), it is an article of faith that Australian teams don't accept the obvious - that cricket has a spirit.
rach 1
I don't understand cricket. The scoring system seems so strange. Is it interesting?

soubriquet 0
It's interesting if you come from any part of the empire, outside North America. Of course, the Poms are finding it much more interesting than the Aussies at the moment. A Test is played over five days and each side bats and bowls twice. The team with the most runs at the finish gets to win, unless it's a draw. This series has England going into the final game 2-1 up. Australia need to win to retain The Ashes having held them for 16 years.
Ocean11 0
rach, it's absolutely fascinating. To some people. I remember one Crispin at school who would turn up breathlessly late to Physics and declare to everybody present "England is 6 for 4 with 2 cucumber sandwiches down!" or something of the sort. He would splutter apoplectically when I replied, "Oh splendid! ... Is that good or bad?"
BagOfCrisps 24
Like rugby the other year, cricket is now "getting popular". It'll all die down when this Ashes nonsense finishes, when everyone will forget it again.
Ocean11 0
What are the Ashes anyway? Are they the mortal remains of somebody's great grandmother or what?
soubriquet 0
The Ashes, are the remains of the bails burned to commemorate (celebrate?) "The death of cricket" after an Australian touring party won a series in about 1890. The urn is a clay miniature, about 15cm high. It is a magnificantly trivial trophy. England with a younger team, and the mental strength not to buckle. Australia hard as nails, England are going to have to kill them and break their fingers before they will let go. js 0
Thank goodness the Chums beat us! Maybe it'll reinvigorate world Cricket once again - it was so boring when Oz kept winning i.e. a 17 year winning streak is ridiculous. The Poms really needed that victory and good luck to 'em. Scouser, as for Rugby, they might've won the World Cup but they've imploded once again following it. (I stand by previous comments - one man [Wilko] don't make a team.) Hopefully the Engrish side will give us a battle in future Day Tests too. Congrats to all the Poms out there - good Series.
woywoy 0
The Australians never had a chance in the final few days of the last test ... I dont know why they talked it up so much. A very sad day for Australian cricket indeed but then again, it is rather boring when the Australians win 5-0 so next year might be even more exciting! We can all look forward to it then, not that I get to watch much cricket here in Japan anyway!

I did and I can assure you that if Warne had held on to that catch to dismiss Peterson for 15, we would have been in with a very good chance indeed. It sucks that crappy English weather ruined the chance of a result either way. Still England were a better team over the whole series and were worthy winners
