Just the principal of the thing, paying 1000 yen (that's £7) for literally a piece of plastic, that galls me. Maybe 100 yen shops stock them.
  2. I borrowed someone's powder board for a few days and it didn't have one. I think I just scraped snow off on the bindings. I don't recall getting off lifts being harder.
  3. Wondering whether to get a stomp pad for my new snowboard. My previous (first) board had one and I did find it useful for scraping snow off my boots and gripping the board coming off chair lifts. But browsing in Sports Depo today I saw they're 1000 yen even for their own-brand. It pains me to pay 1000 yen for a piece of plastic. And now I'm a better boarder I wonder if I really need one. pic in case you didn't know it's called a stomp pad (I didn't)

Feels weird without them, though I do wonder a bit what they're supposed to do as the guard is only on the inside of the wrist and I'd have thought it's more common for the hand to get bend away from the arm in a fall.

(I wonder if you literally can't ski it or if there just aren't any official pistes.) The cable car's supposed to date from 1950.

  8. Anyone know a website with historical snow data from there? I'd heard resorts in Slovkia were already open but most sites say Tatranská Lomnica (or anywhere else) doesn't open till December. Anyone skied there early in the season? Thanks
  9. You can find big sizes online. Works out cheaper than buying in japan even with shipping. Google backcountry.
  10. i always wear helmet, knee pads and wrist guards but never transceiver, probe or shovel. When I go backcountry it's just between me and God...

  14. and they won't stop you taking a board on cos the resort's not open, or anything like that? Are day tickets on sale? Also, are the goryu and 47 gondolas running too?

  18. all I'm saying is at happo, the hill I know best, warnings about going out of bounds are ambiguous and conflicting. I admit I don't know the details of when people got tickets pulled but I know it has happened a few times. That said, I always ski the "wrong" side of the rope and never had any problems. My advice is if you get apprehended, play the dumb gaijin and pretend you thought YOUR side of the rope was the RIGHT side and the OTHER side was out of bounds. Failing that, suddenly spot a 1000 yen note on the ground and say "You saw it first - it's yours". That's like a week's pay to them so

  21. and what about when the snow police steal passes off honest punters caught out of bounds? They're ripping off the customer there, so they deserve to be ripped off a bit themselves. What goes around comes around...

Staff of bars and hotels always share one belonging to their establishment. The lift companies must know that. If you buy a car and drive it some of the time and your wife drives it some of the time, are you ripping off the car manufacturer or the highways agency? Should you
