  1. Guys, VERY short notice for this one... Tsonda and myself are gonna meet up for a beer in Shibuya later this evening. If anyone wants to join, then meet us at 9pm in front of the big starbucks at the huge crossing just outside the station! Any takers? If it's nearing 9 and you wanna join, just message me on sven.in.japan(at)gmail.com Ok, so there... I just put my address up... go for it stalkers
  2. Fattwins: I sure will... I might even try and look for a bargain gear-wise at the end of this season. I'm considering Hakuba this weekend... if I'm there I'll let you and Yama know Sanno: Don't worry, I didn't send those vids, just one of you falling down... nothing to be ashamed of Toque: Yeah, that run was great... I looked over it longingly after you guys left, but thought better of it.
  3. Haha... those pics look cool Sanno, I like the "how do I stop this thing?" look of the second one And a big thanks to both you guys... Sanno for the gear (still in good nick) and the patience while I dug myself out of self-made holes and Toque for showing me around Nozawa for an all-round great intro to powder skiing... just awesome. By the way guys, I've emailed the vids that were taken to the snow japan people, so hopefully they'll be up soon
  4. Nervous slow? Next time let me know and I'll come and escort you from the station Yep, the food was good, didn't exactly come with a smile though And Ngarutoa, nice work on the travel commitment, although this time it could be said that you were already in the area
  5. Fattwins, the hardest stuff would be a couple of goes under the gunbarrel chair in thredbo... not because it was difficult but because it was ugly rocky terrain. Now I'm looking to see some trees, but this time with snow underfoot.
  6. 'twas another good SJ get together. At the risk of breaking rules no. 1 and 2, I can divulge that musically, the Venga-bus didn't quite reach the standard set at the last meeting, but the night was still good fun, and the curry was spicy.
  7. Toque and Yama, I'll be in Nozawa this weekend as well and I'm looking to expand my skiing horizons... any chance of tagging along with you guys for a few runs on Saturday/Sunday? Also, did you want to get together for a drink or two saturday night? Let me know what your plans are , cos mine are pretty open at the moment
  8. England do have a cricket academy very similar to Australia's one. The aussie one isn't the AIS though (that's mainly olympic-type sports... in Canberra), it's the Australian Cricket Academy... It was in Adelaide but now has moved to Brisbane. As for England, it's the "National Academy". Interestingly enough, do you know who's head coach there? It's Rod Marsh, former head coach of the aussie academy
  9. I'll see you there guys there "Celebrate we will, cos life is short but sweet for certain"

Can'ttalknowmustgetdrunkmorelater Ok, so I'm there on Wednesday. I didn't get out snow-ward this weekend, but I'll make up for it soon I'll see you guys Wednesday
  11. If in Tokyo, I'm there! ... still haven't heard from this company... less than pleased at having spent the week pressing the 'check mail' button.
  12. Heh, last night I explained that australians use g'day a lot, and got the surprised reply of 'oh, so you speak australiago, eigo, and nihongo... anything else?' Heh, it made me laugh, but it was mostly due to my own nihongo, which is still fairly rudimentary.

Head on 'round to my place an 'ave a barby ... as long as you're not a whingeing pom it's all good. As for seppo ... I've got no idea what that bloody well means. /end (cheek<-tongue)
  14. Ah, cheers to Echineko for the new word and woywoy for the translation. It has been added to my little black book list of words to learn. Speaking of kuchikomi, Echineko, I'll get back to you soon with the name of that place I went to in Gunma... I still haven't asked
  15. Well, according to google: fresh snow is 166.0 kilograms/cubic meter packed snow is 470.5 kilograms/cubic meter This makes packed snow just a little bit lighter than rice, so you can imagine that a pretty sturdy roof is needed to hold all those bags of rice up And mogski, the reason they quote per sq m is that it's just the easiest way to guess when a house roof will cave in... a quote per cubic metre would be hard because the actual density would change from the fresh fluffy stuff on top down to the packed stuff below. So they are really just saying something like:
  16. 10cm*10cm*10cm = 1 litre = 1kg 1m*1m*1m = 1000 times the above, so yeah, 1 cubic metre is 1000kg (or 1 metric tonne). The point of interest here is that the weights for the snow are quoted per square metre, not cubic. I guess that means that they're talking about how much the whole thickness of snow weighs. Ie, if the snow is 3m deep, then it's the equivalent of 3 cubic metres.
  17. Unfortunately no avie gear... I was thinking some tree skiing might be a gentler introduction to proper powder than anything in avie areas! But hey, I'm up for pretty much anything at the moment...

  19. I might be running out of ski-time with an upcoming job, and I'd really like to get some "off the groomed stuff" under my belt. For this, is anyone planning something this weekend and wants another SJ skier to go with? Basically, I'm happy to tackle any terrain, as long as there's someone there to show me the way I'm happy to go anywhere within reach of tokyo, and I can also go before/after this weekend. Any takers?
  20. I go for pretty much all of the above, but most important is a recomendation from someone *about* any/all of the above... I haven't been here long enough to compare and contrast for myself.
  21. Firstly, an A+ goes out to sunrise for the wonderful performance last night, it was great to see ya again, and even better to hear the voice come out to play. Also, great to meet some new SJ faces! Hope to catch people again both on and off the slopes... there might even be a PM or two about some upcoming skiing And for those I promised a job interview update to ... I had my first proper taste of bureaucracy in Japan earlier today. It was a 1 and a bit hour bus ride each way with a 10 minute interview in between... the resolution was "we can't say whether you've got the job y

  23. Nice one... looks like we've got a few coming, so it should be good! Hey sunrise, I just gave the number a call, but they don't take bookings... is there any way we can get an SJ table organised? Anyway, even if that's not possible I'll probably come a bit earlier regardless, so I can try and get us some prime fruit-throwing seats...
  24. well then you shouldn't have pissed off so many people beforehand
