I roll in the snow since occasionally but my hair hasn't turned white, maybe in another 40 years or so. -

It about 60km from Nikko. Never seen any wild animals in the snow before. Later that day I also saw a rabbit (not white). -

Ok Kamoshika it is. It has 2 little horns and looks sorts of like a very wooly goat. Oze Iwakura was fun. Quite busy for a Thursday (a busload of SDF guys and some alpine and freestyle teams training) but no one off the groomed slopes. Most was roped off but it wasn't difficult to get to the good stuff and the partollers smiled at me when they saw me coming from a roped off area. Even the Gondola line was completely accesible, although I didn't want to go there but ended up skiing it a few times because the bowl leading to the gondola line was the best I could find. Ok, just for 3 runs. Yesteday had a great day at White World Oze Iwakura. It's a 3 hour drive from Tokyo and has plenty of powder opportunities that you don't have to share it with anyone, until I saw tracks of someone else and it went straight down. A little further I suddenly saw something moving and there was a mountaingoat. The following 2 runs I saw him crawling through the snow making his way up hill. On the 3 third run he was standing on the top of some rocks and I approached him to make a better picture but then he jumped off the rocks and took off. After that I was al

Wearing a beacon doesn't have anything to do with a good jacket, but _spud wants recco. That's useless so I said to forget recco and get a beacon instead. If it is a pure weight issue than don't get a beacon and you will be found in late spring. If you wear a recco you will be found by the end of the day. Both scenarios you're gone. -

recco might help if it is a sunny day and the resort has a chopper with the recco machine in it on standby, but in general it is a body finding machine. Wearing a beacon together with your buddies will give you far better odds. In general recco doesn't add anything to your jacket just weight. -
In France they used to start on short skis and every day ski on a longer ski until you reach normal length. Don't think they are still using this method. Japanese ski slalom racers were known to use short skis for technique/balance training. From a strictly learning perspective using a shorter ski for a day doesn't need to be bad.

Usually don't wear mine, but after reading Sock_monkey's comments on tre skiing and seeing Kumapix with one I took mine on the hill last Saturay. It was great because it keeps you head much better warm then an beanie.
